Description
Sept. 7, 1965 G. s. WORCESTER 3,204,675
BEACH BAG Filed Feb. 14, 1964 United States Patent O '3,204,678 BEACH BAG Gurdon S. Worcester, High St., Gloucester, Mass. Filed Feb. 14, 1964, Ser. No. 344,879 3 Claims. (Cl. 15G-l) This invention relates to carry bags such as are used to carry beach accessories.
Two common needs at a beach are a receptacle for wet and dry articles and a head rest or cushion. It is the object of this invention to meet the two needs with a simple, inexpensive bag.
According to the invention a beach bag comprises an outer open ended envelope of llexible material, handle means at the open end of the envelope, inner walls integral with the envelope and forming an inflatable cushion, said inner walls comprising watertight, iiexible material dividing said envelope into two compartments and preventing the passage of water between said compartments, and means through which to inflate the cushion whereby said bag may be used as a cushion and for storing wet and dry articles separately.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which FIG. l is a front elevation of an inilatable beach bag;
FIG. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of FIG. l;
FIG. 3 is a side view, partly in section, showing the bag inflated; and
FIG. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of FIG. 3.
As shown in the figures the beach bag comprises two outer rectangular sheets 1, preferably of plastic or like sheet material and two similar inner sheets 2. The edges of the inner and outer sheets are heat sealed at the bottom and side `seams 3 so that the outer sheets form the walls of a generally rectangular envelope open at its top. The inner sheets 2 are also sealed at their upper edges to form the Vwalls of an inilatable cushion. Transverse webs 6 within the inner walls Z hold the cushion in cellular shape when inflated. A simple valve opening member '7 with a stopper 8 permits inflation of the inner walls 2. Straps 9 are heat sealed to the open upper edges of the outer walls 1 for use as handles.
While the outer walls 1 are preferably of waterproof plastic such as polyvinyl, or they may be of woven fabric or other sheet material. The inner divider walls are of airtight and watertight material such as polyvinyl, and are thus not only capable of inflation, but also serve as a moisture barrier which divides the envelope into two compartments. Articles to be kept dry may be `safely stored in one compartment while wet articles are kept in the other.
3,2%,678 Patented Sept. 7, 1965 Thus the inflatable divider walls provide the dual function of serving as a cushion and of storing separately wet and dry articles.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modiiications and equivalents which fall within the scope ofthe appended claims.
I claim:
1. A beach bag comprising an outer open ended envelope of flexible material, handle means at the open end of the envelope, inner walls integral with the envelope and forming an iniiatable cushion, said inner walls comprising watertight, ilexible material dividing said envelope into two compartments and preventing the passage of water between said compartments, and means through which to intlate the cushion whereby said bag may be used as a cushion and for storing wet and dry articles separately.
2. A beach bag comprising opposed outer walls of fiexible material partially closed along their edges to form an open ended envelope, handle means attached at the open end of the envelope, opposed inner walls of flexible material secured to the aforesaid closed evelope edges so as to divide the envelope into twocompartments, said inner walls being watertight to prevent the passage of moisture between the two compartments so that wet articles can be stored in one compartment and dry articles in the other, and said inner walls comprising air tight material closed at their edges to form an .iniiatable cushion within said outer walls, and means on one inner wall through which to inilate the cushion.
3. A beach bag comprising four layers of ileXible sheet material of generally rectangular outline, the layers being sealed together along three sides to form an open ended envelope and the inner layers being sealed on their fourth side and arranged to divide the envelope into two compatrnents, handle means at the open end of the envelope, and closable valve means on one inner wall with which to inilate and seal the inner Walls, said inner walls comprising airtight and watertight material so as to prevent passage of water from one compartment to the other, whereby said bag may be used as a cushion and for storing wet and dry articles separately.
