FOLDING BED. No. 339,439. Patented-Apr. 6, 1886.
Jorzzegg? as to occupy but a small space or to be handy the invention consists of certain novel devices PATENT tries.
ISAAC LEVY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDIN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed April 24, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAAo LEVY, a citizen oi the United States of America, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful In1-. provements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved folding bed especially adapted to use for camping purposes.
The object of the invention is to obtain a bed which can be folded into a compact form, so
for transportation, the most desirable form be ing that of a trunk or chest, and a further object is to improve insome particulars the construction of the bed.
To the accomplishment of the above ends and combination of devices, as will be described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the bed when folded, showing an extension in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the same; Fig. 3, a view in perspective of the bed when open and combined with a tent; Fig. 4, a bottom plan of the bed; Fig. 5, a view of one of the removable bed-legs; Fig. 7, a detail perspective of certain parts, and Fig. 6 a top view of the bed.
Like letters refer to like parts in each view.
A A represent the two sections of a folding bed hinged together at a. Mounted in guides 21, secured to the under face of part A, is an extension-piece, 13, provided at one end with a hinged piece, 0, which, when the bed is folded, occupies the position shown in Fig. 1, and forms part of one end of the device.
Extension B is provided with a slot, 0, into which a pin, (1, secured to part A, is inserted, this arrangement serving to limit the movement of extension B. XVhen this extension is drawn out, the piece 0 is turned and forms its support, such piece 0 being locked in position by a hook, e, pivoted to the under side of the extension and adapted to engage with an eye, 2, secured to piece 0. Hook emoves in a guide, f, and has secured to it an arm, g, bent at one end, and through the medium of which the G BED.
Patent No. 339,439, dated April 6, 1886.
Serial No. 163,266. (No model.)
hook is operated. A strip, D, provided with pins 71., is mounted upon hinged piece 0 when the bed is folded, its pins entering holes it formed in the upper edge of said piece 0.
When the bed is unfolded for use, strip D is withdrawn from its position in piece 0, and its pins inserted into suitable openings orholes (not shown) formed in the part A, the strip when in this position forming the foot-board of the bed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. i. As also shown in dotted lines in that figure and Figs. 6 and 7, there are suitable dovetail projections, 1, formed upon one face of strip D, i
and which are adapted to enter similar grooves, m, in a strip, E, said strip E also forming part of the foot-boardof the bed when nnfolded, aud serving, when the bed is folded, to hold the mattress, &c., in place, it being pushed u nder suitable projecting pieces, n, formed upon each side of section A.
F is the head-board of the bed when in use, and forms one end of the chest when the parts are folded. It is hinged at its lower ends to the sides of section A, and secured at points about the center of its sides are curved arms 0, provided each on its lower end with ahook, as at p, dotted lines, Fig. 3, adapted to engage with suitable pins, q, secured to the sides of the said section, said arms being free at their lower ends. This arrangement enables me to push back thehead-board to an incline, and at the same time limits its movement and insures a firm support.
Gr represents the legs of section A',which are removabl y secured thereto.
The position of the several parts when the bed is folded ready for transportation, &c., is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Although I have illustrated and described a tent in connection with my bed, I lay no claim thereto in this application.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination, with bed A A, of the bottom sliding extension, B, provided with slot 0 and pin d, its hinged extension 0, and the head-board F, as set forth.
2. The combination, with bed A A, of the bottom sliding extension, 13, provided with slot 0 and pin (1, its hinged extension C, and the strip D, as set forth.
3. The combination, with bed A A, of the bottom sliding extension, 13, provided with hinged extension 0, of the hook e, eye e, and [0 slot 0 and pin d, its hinged extension Qand the arm g, as set forth. strips D and E, as set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 4. The combination, with bed A A, of the presence of two Witnesses. 5 bottom sliding extension, B, provided with hinged extension 0, and slot 0 and pin (1, as ISAAC LEVY set forth. XVitnesses:
5. The oombi11ation,with bed A A and the M. J. OLAGETT,
bottom sliding extension, 13, provided with LOUIS NOLTING.
