Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricno JOSEE JOHNSON, OF NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIIVISELF, AND JOHN WARD,
JR., OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
IMPRovED lRoNlNc-TABLE.
Spcciiicatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 35.735, dated June 24, 1362. l
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOsEE JOHNSON, of New Y York, in the county and State of New York,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvemcnt in Ironing-Tables; and Ido hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being made lo the accompanying drawings, in which'- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 `is a plan Afrom below; and Fig. 3 is an end view, the black lines in all the figures showing the table extended ready for use and the red lines representing it folded for stowage.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing an ironing table with a top in the form of a broad pres's board and with a central supporting-frame hinged thereto, open at that end beneath the narrow end of the top, and supported on three legs, two of which are capable of being folded into a line with the frame, or of being extended to support the table, the top being so hinged to the frame as tobe folded over parallel therewith for stowage or turned up in a horizontal position for use.
llIyinvention, when opened for use, presents a firm and stift' table for ironing purposes, one eud'being so supported as to allow the placing of skirts or other similar garments over it without the necessity of removing any support or disturbing the position of thetable. When closed, it folds into asmall compass and occupies very little room on the floor.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation by the aid of the drawings.
A is the top of the table, made in the form represented. The central supporting-frame is composed of two longitudinal bars, B b, connected firmly together under the broad end of the top bythe vert-ical braces C c, as represented. n
To one side of B the tabletop A 1s Joined by the hinges D, so as to be capable of assuming the positions shown in black and redhnes. The open end of B b is supported by a broad foot, E, slightly arched at the bottom to give a firmer base. To the other end of B b two legs, F F, are hinged by the hinges G, as represented, so as to be capable ot' standing at right angles to B b, as shown in black lines, or in line therewith, as shown by the red lines.V
H H are buttons to hold the legs F F extended.
The top A- is proportioned as represented, and of such size that its narrow end may serve in lieu of a bosom-board, a portion nearer the broad end as a skirt-board, and the wide end as a general ironing-table.
The frame B b is strongly made and supports the narrow end of the top A very rigidly. rPhe under side of B is beveled off, as shown, so as to allow of the ready slipping on of articles of clothing in ironing bosoms, skirts, dre., thus doing away with the nccessity for and the inconvenience of a movable support for that end of the table.
/Vhen folded, my improved table forms a thin package, which will stand against theside of the room out of the way, or can be set aside in a closet or other convenient place, requiring but little room, and being readily and quickly expanded for use.
I do not claim the employment of the hinged legs F F and a hinged top adapted to fold against a single central frame, for such are shown in a patent granted to me February 5, 1861; but
What I do claim` as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction and use of an ironing-table with a tapering top, A, and with a central frame, B b, open at one end,` as shown by M, to allow the slipping on of skirts and thelike, supported laterally by folding legs F F, which are capable of being folded into a line with the said frame, so as to form a novel table possessing the advantages herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEE JOHNSON.
Witnesses:
THOMAS D. STE'rsoN, D. W. Srnrsoa'.
