D. T. CHAMBERS.
TUG PASTENER FOR SINGLE TREES.
No. 357,368. J
Patented Feb. 8, 1887.
WITNESSES:
- INVENTORZ ATTORNEYS DANIEL T. CHAMBERS, OF MANSFIELD, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-THIRD TO FRANK O. SGHIFFER AND WVILLIAM H. HOUPT, BOTH OF SHELBY, OHIO.
TUG-FASTENER FOR SING LE -TREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,368, dated February 8, 1887.
5, Application filed January 10, 1887. Serial No. 223,902. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, DANIEL T. CHAMBERS, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tug-Fasteners for Single- Trees, of which the following is a specification'.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily operated device for fastening the traces to a single-tree, and one which will securely hold the traces without danger of accidental dislodgment.
It consists of a tilting latch of angular shape hinged upon a horizontal axis at or near the end of the single-tree, and having one hub adapted to lie longitudinally with the singletree and the other to project upwardly at about a right angle thereto, the limb lying longitudinal with the single-tree being held in such position by the pressure of the trace, but permitting, when tilted by hand, of the easy dislodgment of the trace.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a verticallongitudinal section through. the single-tree and its tug fastener, the latch being shown in the fastened position in full lines, while in dotted lines is shown the position which itoccupies in applying the trace. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end of the single-tree with the latch thrown open.
In the figures,A represents the single-tree, made of wood, as usual, and having on its upper surface, near the end, a rectangular mortise, forming a seat for the latch.
B is the latch, which, as shown, is made in U shape, and has an eye, a, at one end of its outer end of the mortise.
base to receive a hinge-bolt, b, that passes horizontally through the single-tree at the The base 0 of the latch is made on its under side with arabbeted edge on each side, that allows the outer edges to rest upon the top of the singletree,
while the middle portion descends into the mortise, and this portion is preferably made thicker at one end than at the other, and also tapered in cross-section, so that it seats in the mortise with a slightly wedging action that prevents rattling.
Now, in applying the trace the latch'is turned up, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2, in which position the limb d lies flat against the outer end of the single-tree. The trace T is then placed with its slit or eye opposite the end of the single-tree, as in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and is forced over the end of the single-tree and the limb cl of the latch in the direction indicated by the arrow. The latch is then tilted upon its pivot and its other limb orbase drops to a longitudinal position on the singletree, while the limb (1 stands erect. In this position the limb d preventsrthe trace from slipping off, while the pressure of the trace on the base inside its hinge-bolt prevents the lat-ch from rising and tilting.
In making use of my invention the inner limb, e, of the U-shaped latch is not absolutely essential, as the increased thickness of the single-tree will prevent the trace from passing too far up on the single-tree.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. As a new article of manufacture, the hinge-latch B, having a base portion, 0, with an eye at one end, and an angularly-projecting limb, d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a single tree and a horizontal pivotbolt fixed therein, of an angular locking-latch consisting of a base and an angularlyprojecting limb hinged at or near its angle to tilt in a vertical plane, substantially as andfor the purpose described.
3. The combination, with a single-tree having a recess in its upper side and a horizontal pivot-bolt fixed therein, 01' the angular locking-latch hinged upon the pivot-bolt and arranged to seat itself in the recess, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, with a single-tree having a recess in its upper side and a horizontal pivot-bolt fixed therein, of an angular lockinglatch with rabbeted sides hinged upon the pivotbolt, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with a single-tree having a recess in its upper side and a horizontal pivot-bolt fixed therein, of an angular tilting latch made wedge shape to bind in its seat, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' DANIEL T. CHAMBERS. Witnesses:
