SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,559, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed July 24, 1886. Serial No. 208,943. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs G. LAUREAU, of Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Converters, of which the following is aspeciiication.
This invention pertains to converters for use in the treatment of molten metal by the Bessemer or pneumatic processes.
The improvements will be readily understood from the following description, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, half vertical section, of a converter embodying my improvements; Fig, 2, a horizontal section of the same at the tuyere-level, and Fig. 8, a borizontal section of a portion of the same at the same level.
The figures of the drawings are upon different scales.
In the drawings, A indicates the upper portion ofthe converter; B, the trunnions, O in Fig. 2, a dotted line representing the vertical plane of the axis 4of the trunnion; D, the tuyercs, arranged in oppositely disposed groups below each trunnion, thus leaving two sides of the converter free from tuyeres; E, a wind-conduit arranged to lead the blast to the tnyeres, F, a conduit connecting the conduit E with the trunnion, through which the blast is received, G, the bottom of the converter, the same being separable from the parts above; Il, that portion of the converter containing the tuyeres and lying between the bottom G and the top A, and hereinafter designated as the tuyere-zone, J, bolts securing the bottom of the converter and the top and the tuyere-zone together, these bolts engaging circumferential flanges on the converter-top, and on the bottom, and thus serving to clamp the tuyere-zone between the bottom and the top ol' the converter; K, the line of juncture between the converter-top and the tuyere-zone, and L the line of juncture between the tuyere-zone and the converterbottom.
The linings of the converter-top,the tuyerezone, and the bottom may be formed of shaped brick or of rammed ganister. rIhe grouping of the tuyeres below the trunnions, thus leaving the sides of the converter free of tuyeres, permits of the tuyeres becoming uncovered by the molten metal at a tipping angle very much slighter than if the tuyeres were distributed entirely around the converter, thus permitting the pouring to take place at a much less angle of tipping than usual. The top" of 'the converter and the tuyere-zone and the bottom are separately lined, and these parts are then secured by the bolts J, the lines of juncture being probably luted. When so arranged, there is but little Wearing away of the lining of the bottom. In fact, when everything is working Well, the bottom gets thicker instead of thinner, and the top wears but' little, the bulk of the wear coming upon the tuyerezone. Vhen the tuyerezone is too much worn for further use, it may be repaired, or be replaced by a duplicate, by simply disconnecting the bolts J, which allows the parts to separate, so that the tuyere-zone can be removed, Src.
The conduit may completely encircle the converter, or it may be only so far as may be needed to make proper connection with the tuyeres.

Igt is common practice to make the lower portion of a converter in the form of a removable section containing either horizontal, vertical, or inclined tuyeres, the lining of the tuyerezone being integral with the lining of the bottom or floor of the converter. In such arrangement the lining of the tuyerezone could not be restorcdwitliout affecting the lining of the bottom or door of the converter, and is thus broadly distinguishable from my improved construction, in which the lining of the tuyere-zone is restorable without disturbance of the lining of the bottom or door.
I claim as my invention-.-
In a converter, a converter-top havinga lining,a converter-bottom having alining, a lined tuyere-zone disposed between the convertertop and the converter-bottom and separable therefrom, and means for clamping the tuyerezone between the converter-top and the converter-bottom, combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
