UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KEPPLER, OF JUDA, WISCONSIN.
SHOE-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,094, dated May 3, 1887.
Application filed February 23, 1887. Serial No. 228,472. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KEPPLER, of Juda, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion.
My invention relates to a shoe-fastening that is adjustable but non-elastic.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a part of ashoe having my fastening thereon and showing a method of attaching it to the shoe. Figs. 2 and 3 are the two parts of the fastening. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the part shown in Fig. 3.
The fastening consists of an elongated plate, a, preferably of metal, provided at its rear end with a slot,'b, through which to pass a strap or tongue, 0, which strap or tongue is integral with or attached to one of the quarters d d of the shoe near its front edge. This platea is also provided with two series of slots or recesses, e 6, one series on each side of the plate, which recesses in the series on one side of the plate alternate with the recesses in the series on the other side of the plate, in their location in the plate longitudinally, from front to rear. These slots or recesses e e extend from the edge of the side of the plate a inwardly at a slight angle rearwardly, to the center of the plate longitudinally, and there turn or bend forward on the center longitudinal line, forming a short stud-retaining recess or socket, f, as a part of the recess 6. The complementary plate 9 of the fastening, also of metal, is likewise provided with a slot, h, for
receiving the retaining strap or tongue 0, by which it is attached to the quarter of the shoe. This plate 9 has at or near its front end a hook or headed stud, i, affixed to or integral with said plate 9. the shank of which hook or stud is adapted to enter the recess 0 and be retained in the socket f. The plates a and g are both slightly curved longitudinally, whereby they are adapted to more nicely fit over the foot or ankle.
It will be understood that in use after the shoe is on the foot the shank of the hook or stud i is inserted in one of the recesses e e, and enters into the socket f, that particular recess being selected and used which the hook or stud will just enter when the quarters of the shoeand the two plates are drawn up properly about the ankle; and it will be further understood that by means of the two series of recesses e a the fastening may be adapted to fit a larger or smaller ankle, or more or less tightly, as desired.
These fastenings are adapted for use on shoes or over-shoes, as desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe-fastening consisting of a plate, a, having two series of alternating recesses, e e, each recess formed with arearwardly-inclined entrance part and a forwardly extending socket-,1, in combination with a plate, 9, having a headed stud or hook, i, the shank of which. is adapted to enter the recesses e, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
