On one end of the shaft K is secured the crank-arm K connected by the link K with the crank-arm L, formed on the shaft L, mounted in suitable bearings on the main frameA and the bracket A. On the shaft L is secured the bevel gear-wheel L, meshing into the bevel gear-wheel L, secured to the vertical shaft L, mounted in the brackets A and A, and carrying at its upper end the bevel gear-wheel L meshing into the bevel gearwheel L, secured to the main driving-shaft B.
On the outer ends of the main frame A are secured the brackets A", made of spring-steel or other suitable elastic material. On the brackets A at each end of the frame A, are mounted the shafts N and N, respectively, each carrying pulleys N placed suitable distances apart. Over each corresponding set of pulleys N on the shafts N and N passes an endless belt, 0, adapted to carry the paper to be printed from the feed-table S to the other end of the frame A, and delivering the paper to the usual fly connected with the machine. Each of the endless belts O is provided at one, two, or more places, which are equal distances apart, with gripping-fingers P, each consisting of afixed arm, P, on which is pivoted a springarm, P, said arms P and P" extending to one side of the belt 0, and being connected by a spring, P, which holds the gripping-fingers in a closed position.

opened by the trippers Q, secured to the main frame A on each side, directly under the feedtable S. Each tripper Q is provided with an inclined top adapted to engage the outer ends of the gripping-fingers P, so that when said outer ends enter the tripper Q then the fingers are opened when passing toward the small end of said tripper Q, as illustrated in Fig. 10.
The feed-table S is supported from the main frame at the rear end and is held in the usual inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1. The shaft N, which operates the belts O, is rotated by an endless belt, N, passing over the pulley N, secured to the rear shaft, N, and also passing over a pulley, N secured to the shaft L,
which receives its rotary motion from the main drivingshaft B by the gear-wheels L L", L, and L", connected as above described.
The operation is as follows: When the main shaft B is rotated, then its gear-wheel B, meshing into the gear-wheel B rotates the platenshaft 0, which, by its crank-arms C and the pitmen D, imparts an up-and-down motion to the platen E. The paper to be printed is fed from the feed-table S upon the belts O, which travel in the direction of the arrow a, and the lower end of the paper is passed between the fingers of the grippers P, which are then in an open position, as shown in Fig. 10, asthey then pass through the narrow ends of the trippersQ, and as soon as the paper is thrown on the gripping-fingers then the latter leave the trippers Q, whereby the spring P closes the gripping-arms, thus holding the front end securely in place and carrying the paper forward on the belts O in the direction of the arrow a. As soon as the grippers P arrive at the outer end of the platen E the lingers strike against the lugs E, projecting downward from the platen E, whereby the forward motion of the belts O is interrupted, and the belt N, imparting motion to said endless belts O, .is allowed to slip over its pulley N on the shaft N. The platen E has then already commenced to move downward by the action of the crankarms 0 and the pitmen D, and by the continued motion of which the paper and the belts O are moved downward with said platen upon the chase G, and the paper receives an impression from the type i u said chase G. The brackets A supporting the shafts N and N, being of elastic material, are drawn inward toward each other on the downward motion of the platen E, pressed on the upper parts of the belts O, and when the platen again rises.

As soon as the impression is made, then the platen E rises again and permits the belts O to assume their normal position by the outward motion of the brackets A", as above described. The platen rises sufiiciently so that its lugs E disengage the grippingfingers P, whereby the belts O are again permitted to travel forward in the direction of the arrow a, as the pulley N is again free to rotate by the action of the belt N. The paper is carried to the outer ends of the belts O and delivered to the fly in the usual manner. When the platen E commences to rise, then the inking-rollers H travel from the ink-r0] lers R toward the front, thus passing over the type in the chase Gand inking the same, after which the rollersH travel backward again to their rear position near the rollers R until the platen E has descended and made the impression. This forward and tack-ward motion of the inking-rollers H is accomplished by the swinging motion imparted to the extension ink-roller arms J by the links K, connecting said extension ink-roller arms J with the arm K, secured to the shaft K, receiving an oscil-' lating motion from the rotating shaft L, connected by the crank-arm L and the link K i When the lowest position, and the .pitmen D are now 7 moved downward, against the springs E so that a yielding orsoi'timpression is given to the paper by the platen E The pressure with which the platen presses the paper upon the type is regulated by adjusting. thev nuts D so as to lengthen or shorten the pitmen D, thereby causing the springs E to press with more or less force against the platen andsaid pitmen D, thus causing a dwell of platen E on the type. When the ink-rollers H travel forward and backward on the mainframe A, the rod J of the extension roller-arm J is drawn in and out of the hollowpart J by the action of the swinging motionof saidpart J 2 and the spring J, which is' compressed when said. part J assumes an inclinedposition. l
,Having thus fullydescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a printing-press, the combination, with a platen, of endless belts carrying the paper and held below said platen, pulleys over which i said endless belts pass, and elastic brackets supporting said pulleys and disposed to project obliquely outward from the main frame,
whereby said brackets yield bodilyinwardly the type and held belowsaid platen, and 'in'k-- ing-rollers adapted to travel over the type on when the platen presses the upper parts of the endlessbelts downward,substantially as shown and described.
