FREDERICK A. FORD, OF NErV YORK, N. Y.
BOX FOR CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 377,245, dated January 31, 1888.
Application filed June 8, 1857. Serial No. 240,614.
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fannnnrox A. FORD, of the city of New York, county and State of New York,,have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Cigars, of which the following is such a full, clear, concise, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvement relates more especially to that class of boxes in which cigars are packed and in and from which they are sold.
It is a well-known fact that an ornamental appearance to cigar-boxes attracts purchasers, and to give such appearance, and thereby obtain increased sales, various fancy labels and designs have been employed; but a greater inducement to consumers would exist if the boxes were adaptable for subsequent use, and by placing the name of the brand upon boxes that will be preserved a valuable advertisement can be secured to the manufacturer.
\Vith boxes of the ordinary form of construction the various marks of the trade placed or impressed directly thereon detract from the appearance, and the first disposition and opening of the boxes occasions further defacement on account of the cancellation and destruction of the revenue-stamps, as required by law, and by the breaking and tearing of the various labels intended for decoration. Consequently the future utility of such boxes for other purposes is impaired.
The object of my invention is to provide a box for cigars upon which the revenuestamp may be properly affixed and other usual labels or marks attached or impressed, and which will permit of the cancellation and destruction of said stamp and of the opening of the box without injury to or defacement of inner metallic box or portion capable of subsequent use.
My invention consists of a cigar-box having an outer shell or casing of suitable protecting material, preferably pasteboard, and an inner receptacle of metal, the two parts being united and yet adapted to be separated from each other after cigars have been removed from the box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is (No model.)
a perspective view of the box closed and with the revenue stamp pasted thereon in the manner required by law. Fig. 2 is a plan view when the top cover is removed, showing the upper edges of the outer sides of the box, to gether with the lid of the inner metallic receptacle. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
A represents the sides and ends 01' the outer case or box, and B the outer top or cover, which is shown in Fig. 1 as reaching down partially over the sides; but this cover maybe made and hinged in the ordinary way.
C represents the inner metallic receptacle or box. This portion, as shown in Fig. 2, is provided with a hinged lid, which lid maybe suitably decorated and bear the name or brand of the cigars sold from the box. The sides and ends of the metallic box may contain any desired inscription, and are also preferably decorated, in order that the entire inner part may have a neat appearance when the cigars are disposed of and it is disconnected from the outer case.
The outer and inner boxes are provided with corresponding apertures, preferably at the ends and below the upper plane occupied by the cigars.
E 19 are fasteners, which, being inserted through said apertures or holes and clinched 0n the inner sides, securely unite the metallic box C with the outer casing, A, but which may be unclinched and withdrawn after cigars have been removed, at which time the said outer and inner boxes are thus capable of complete separation. The fasteners E E may pass through holes in the lower part of the sides; or, indeed, any suitable attachment may be employed by which the outer and inner boxes are securely held together and adapted to be separated after disposing of the cigars.
By the use of a box such as described any stamps, labels, or marks can be attached to or impressed upon the outer casing, which casing protects the metallic box from injury, and the package may he opened and used without any (lclaceni-ent of the inner metallic box, upon which is any desired decoration or advertisement; also, after sale or consumption of the cigars, the outer covering being removed or destroyed, the metallic box will still be kept,
lic part being secured to said casing by fastenings arranged to be capable of release only after cigars have been removed from the box, whereby saidmetallic part may be detached and put to other use, substantially as set forth. 15
