\ 1' BX I-N Ll H E WITNESSES 1 VE N TOR WM m ATTO NEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN GOLDSMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CQMBlNATlON-RULER.
SPECIPTCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,928, dated March 6. 1888.
Application filed April 80, 1887. Serial No. 236,709.
To all whom it may concern:
Be lbKIJOWIJ that I, HERMAN GOLDSMITH,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the.
city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Rulers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and accurate description.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved ruler; and it consists in making the ruler with one or more interior compartments, which form a convenient receptacle for pens, pencils, and other writing material. The ruler is also provided with an independent plate or rod, secured to its base in such manner as to prevent ink from defacing the paper as it is ruled, or soiling the fingers or clothes of the person using the ruler. There is also attached to the ruler adjustable rings for spacing lines while ruling the paper.
The chief object of the invention is the baseplate and its combination with the other fea tures mentioned.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 shows a section of such side elevation. Fig. 3 shows an end view of Fig. 1.
My improvement is made as follows:
f A is the ruler, preferably made of circular orm.
B is a plate or rod secured to the ruler by screws, rivets, or any other suitable means, forming a base to the ruler, and so attached as to raise the ruler above the surface of the paper. This base or protecting plate B can be made to protrude from the base of the ruler, so as to form a paper-cutter, if desired. (See Fig. 3.)
(No model.)
F and G are two compartments formed in the interior of the ruler, and adapted to receive pens, pencils, paper, leads, or other writing material inclosedin them, as shown. The ends of these interior compartments are provided with detachable stoppers E, for holding securely the contents of these interior compartm-ents.
O O are the adjustable rings, provided with finger-pieces D. These rings are so fitted on the rulers as to permit them to be drawn apart or moved toward each other on the ruler, and thus enable a person ruling paper with the ruler to adjust these rings so as to accurately rule lines of different lengths.
The several parts of the ruler may be made of any suitable materials, and the whole form together a cheap and convenient combinationruler. I A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A ruler formed with one or more interior compartn1ents,and provided with an independent base or protecting plate or rod, substantially as described.
2. VA ruler formed with one or more interior compartments and provided with a base or protecting plate and adjustable rings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of April, 1887.
HERMAN GOLDSMITH.
In presence of- R. T. VAN BOSKEROK, OHARLEs G. Con.
