eont'snrin ron SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters eteQtQTHQeSQZS, dated inne E9, 189B.
Application filed February 8, 18313. Serial No. iQ'LQQl..
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that l, Istrie G. Jonsson, of Spnyten Duyvil, city, county, and State of New York, have invented n new und useful improvement in (flonvcrters for Refining Molten iron, of which the followingr is o. full, true, :ind exact description, 'reference being hed to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relzttes to iinproveinentil in that clnss f,i.p1)ninliis for converting crude iron intosteelof dillerent grades wherein e vertically-ndiustnhle tuyere is employed; nud my invention consists in constructing the nu pnrutus :is hereinafter fully set forth, whereby its iunnipul-.ition is greetly facilitated end en improved product obtained.
ln the druwings, Figure i. is :i sectional ele vution of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is esectiou on the line ir, Fig. l.` Fig. 3 is n sectionlon the line y y, Figr. l. Fig. 4 is o. side view, in eleve.- tion, looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. l; nud Fig. 5 is n section illustrating the construction of the tuyere.
The converter ,A consists of two sections, the kettle l5, which rests upon e truck, C,run ning,` upon rnils u, :ind the hood G, which rests detnchnbly upon the kettlennd may be elevoted bodily therefrom when required. Different elevating,f ineens may be employed. 1 have shown in the drawings chains b b, suspended from n spider, c, which may be raised und lowered by chain, d, passing over e guide pulley, e, to n windl-.iss operated by iny snitable appliance. f
From one side of the kettle B, neer 'the top, extendse spout or lip, j", which projects bcyoud the ontline of the hood (i et the rear of the lutter, so as to present :uropcning1 ir, through which inetnl muy-be dre-wn from time to time in order to ineke tests to determine its qiiulity, the opening nt other times bei ng closed by n slub, g, of fireelny or. other refractory Ilnnteriul.
The kettle and hood nre provided euch with the usuel refractory lining, li., nud the hood is provided with ings '13,cxtending downward and serving to properly center it upon the kettle. The tnycre is verticiilly adj estable und extends through e suitably-packed opening in the hood G, so that it can be raised or lowered independently of thehood. fll`he shtml; it ofthe tuyere D is preferably cylindricai in form, so that it muy be tnrned in oep, E, fitting the opening y in the hood, es well ne slide in the seid cap, and the vertical adjustment of the tu yere is effected by ineens of n rech-frame, F
sliding vertically Abetween guides in in, the
freine having firms n, through which the shank of the tuyere extends and in' which it turns without slidinff.
A pinion, p, on n shnit, E, serves e ineens for raising and lowering the freine 7F, together with the tnyere, and the letter is rotated by ineens of e revolving shefnd, carrying e bevelgesr, r, meshing with n siniiier gear, 3,'t-hrongh which the shank 7c slides, hey er feather preventing the geni' s fro in turning upon trie simule Air is conducted to the tnyere through e pipe,
K, connected with 'the upper end of the hel low shank k by e uni eersel pipe-joint, f., so that the shank een both revolve end nieve vertically, While the pipe K lues only e. vertical movement. l
The tuyere may termiimte4 et the lower end in e nozzle oi' any suitable construction. As shown, it terminates in e cross-ber, u, eentrnlly connected to the hollow shank k and having outlet-openings o `u' upon opposite sides, near the opposite ciosed ends, so that the rota,- tion of the tnyere muy be assisted, or in some enses effected, by the reaction of the ontiiowiug current.
I prefer te rotate the t-nyere positively by mechanical ineens nndwith greet rapidity, es I have 'found that by ngiteting the inetnl during its treatment in the converter l nin enebled to produce eproduct ei n higher grade.
it will be seen that the structure described o permits the nir to be introduced at any desired distance below the snrfnce, end by the use of e movable tuyere the entire body of metal may be so ngiteted este bring it all under the iniinence of the air, eresnlt which could not be perfectly effected if the air were introduced near the surface, but without I(iny other agite tion of the metall than reenits frein the ection oi' the inilowing currents.
It will be oi' course understood tlint the por tion oi the tuye'ro that is within the converter is composed of or covered with snitnble re i'ractory snbstencefor instance, the seid por# tion eonsistso met'eliie tube covered with sleeves; of nre-clay or vother refractory mate ridi.
The contents of ille Converter may lie in Speoied or tested from iinieio timehy removing the erp :1nd inirodneing proper appliances ihrongi the opening sr, or ihe hood may ie lifted hodily, so :is to permit the kettle to lie run ont from time lo time in order to make :my tesis tlmt may ne required, the eonstruction of apparu? ns shown und deseril ed permit4 ingg thi` to he dono with great fneility :nid with the lessof hui. little time.
l. do not limit myself to the use effi single iinyere, :1S inn or more tnyeres mo)` he eni- "pio'ved with meh eonrerier, the :shape ofthe lutter 'ne-ingr; modiied neeordingiy, :1nd i. will lie evident that other means nin); he employed for raising :1nd lowering the tnyen-y independently of ille converter.
,ily (Le eonihiimtlomin i eoiive1'ler,ol'n kettle :ind :i movnhle hood carrying' the :id inotr nio l'nyere i nin ensihlnd lo introdnee the oir nl; any point desired within the metal in the keitle Withoni the nm: of kettle?, having perfo rations; :it different poinil :1nd wiihonteonnee-ling the inyeref; in :my manner with the kettle, while nl lhe Salmo time I om enabled to einen the kettle hy its mp und to uncover it :md wholly remove ihe kettle from the position below the @op und tnyere, the lutter being drown np into the hood to permit tho luternl withdrawal of ihe kettle. These features distinguish invinveniion from theeontrivnnees hnrett'il'ore employed, in which erich lleitle is perforated or Connected with iheinyere or in stntiormry when combined with n movnhle hood, or in which tlnI tnym'e is nlovnlrie :ind (combined with n. stationary cover wllieh is not filled lo :1nd (loes not Seul lin, kettle.
tle movable upon mils, o hood fitted to the npt'o secure por end of' the kettle :md removable hodily therefrom, a inyere passing through the hood, and mechanism, substantially :is deseribed, for both revolving the tuyere and for adjusting it vertically without moving the hood, substantially ns set forth.
2. lheeomhinntiom in :i converter, of aken lle mounted upon wheelszlnd carried on rails, :i hood fitted thereto, mechanism, substantially :is described, for vertically withdrawing the hood bodily from the kettle, o. revolving tn vere' passing through said hood and moving,r independentlj' thereof, and mechanism, snhsiznr tinlly as described, for simultaneously revolv ing und vertically adjusting Suid tnyere, :1S seb forth.
:L The combination, in `n converter, ofthe kettle l, hood C, fitted to said kettle, means, substantially :is described, for vertically nd .insting the hood, :1 revolving tnyere having:
(meer more proieeting arms, initier-gears il S for revolving' the tnyere, Suid miler-gear S be ing verticallyadjnstnble on thestennnmi mech nnism for elevating :1nd depressing the lnyere, :ill substantially ns described.
In testimonywhereofl have signed my nrnno to thisspeeifiention in ihepresenen of twosnhserihing wir messes,
ISAAU G. J'OII'NSON.
