Abstract

An automated apparatus for selectively directing solutions onto the hair and scalp of a person while the individual is sitting in a semi-reclining position. The apparatus is constructed so it may give a wetting action to the hair and scalp prior to directing shampoo onto the hair and scalp for a predetermined length of time, to direct rinse water thereonto, and if desired, a selector switch may be moved to a position to direct a neutralizing rinse or the like onto the hair and scalp. Then the hair and scalp may be rinsed again with water, if desired, and if desired, a color treatment solution may be directed onto the hair and subsequently rinsed with water, all in timed sequence without the patron or an operator touching the hair and scalp. A timer is provided which has a cam to actuate a switch to energize a solenoid valve and pump to automatically drain the system when the operation is completed. The timer is provided which will go through the sequence of operations and stop, and which cannot be restarted until a patron is in the proper position within the cabinet and the housing closed and a start switch is closed to initiate a new operation.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Various appliances and machines for hair and scalp treatment have been proposed heretofore. but these. for the most part. required constant attention and manual manipulation of several mechanisms in order to perform the various functions which the machine was capable of performing.
The present device is so constructed that in beauty salons and tonsorial parlors most of the hair and scalp treatments can be performed with this device in automated sequence. once the patron in properly positioned within the device. and once the operation thereof has been started. the full sequence ofthe operation will follow in timed sequence without the aid ofthe operator. until it is desirable to take the patron from the device.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to improvements in a device for applying solutions to the hair and scalp. without an operator having to manually apply these solutions thereto. The present device is particularly designed for beauty salons. barber shops. and the like. which specialize in the treatment and care of hair and scalp.
The present device enables a patron to sit in a reclining or semi'reclining position in a chair. so the hair and scalp may be treated with oils. shampoos. special rinses. color treatment solutions. and/or clear water rinses. and perform such other treatments as are performed with solutions on the hair and scalp.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION An object of this invention is to provide a device for applying solutions to the hair and scalp without manual aids.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will selectively apply solutions to the hair and scalp without the aid of an attendant.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which will selectively apply a multiplicity of solutions to the hair and scalp in sequential order without the aid of an operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automated hair treating device for supplying various solutions to the hair. in timed relation. so as to properly treat the hair with the solution prior to shampooing. directing a shampoo solution onto the hair and scalp. and directing rinsing solutions onto the hair and scalp without aid of an operator.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device for treatment of the hair and scalp whereby the solutions may be recirculated over a period of time. or the solutions may be discharged into a drain without recirculation.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a timing device with which to time the various electrical functions so as to give maximum efiiciency with a minimum of attendance.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a device for applying cleansing and treating solutions to the hair and scalp, which device encloses the portion of the head without enclosing the face, so as to enable solution to be directed onto the scalp and hair without the face being subjected thereto.
Yet a still further object of the invention is to provide a device for applying solutions of the desired temperatures to the hair and scalp in sequential order. which device is simple in construction. relatively inexpensive to manufacture. and efficient and effective in use.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT With'more detailed reference to the drawings. the numeral I designates generally a support member or cabinet having an upstanding front wall on which a housing. designated generally by the numeral 2, is mounted. The housing 2 is adapted to recieve a portion of the. head H of the patron. which housing is comprised of lower and upper parts 4 and 6, with a head being supported on a cushion support member 8 within portion 4, which head support member 8 has downwardly extending legs 10 to enable the removal of the head support member 8 for cleaning and/or replacement. The lower portion 4 of the housing 2 includes upstanding front and rear walls has support members 3 securing to the cabinet I as by screw members 5, with the rear wall of the lower housing part substantially parallel to the front wall of the cabinet so as to support the lower portion of the housing at a height convenient for the patron to sit in a semireclining position so that the head H will rest upon a substantially horizontal. rearwardly-extending. cushioned head support member 8 substantially as shown in FIG. 1. The upper portion 6 of the housing 2 interfits within housing 4 so water or solution will be directed into the lower portion 4 of the housing 2. A baffle 12 has springs 14 on the lower edge thereof which are fitted into recess 16 of lower portion 4 of the housing. The baffle 12 has a soft elastomcr seal 18 secured along the upper side thereof and is contoured to fit about the neck of the patron. and is suffcicntly yieldable to conform to the neck to prevent the water passing outward thereby.
The lower portion 4 of the housing 2 has a sump 20 which sump has a drain pipe 22 connected thereto. A strainer 24 is provided therein to prevent hair and solids from entering drain pipe 22 which leads to a waste disposal conduit 123 leading to a sewer or the like. or into conduit 124 to be recirculated. depending on the position of valve 122. A sleeve 26 is fitted in the rear portion of the housing 4 at an angle. as will best be seen in FIG. 1. which sleeve 26 receives a tubular shaft 27 therethrough. The sleeve 26 forms a conduit to conve a solution from a hose-like member 28 therethrough and into the tubular shaft 27. The shaft 27 c tends upward into the housing 2 and has conduits 32 connected thereto by means of a tee member 34 to form a U-shaped member. These conduits are pcrfo' rated. as indicated at 36, so as to spray a solution outwardly into housing 2.
A sleeve seal connects the hose 28 and the hollow shaft 27 so that the sprocket 35 may move arcuately about the axis of the hollow shaft 27 so the solution will be conducted therethrough and out through perforations 36. One or more perforate conduits 32 may be used. however. by using two such conduits and rotating the shaft 27 through 180, A complete spraying. on all sides of the head of the patron. may be had. Baffles 38 and 40 are provided on housing portions 4 and 6, re spectively. so as to confine the water and treatment solutions within the housing 2. The upper portion 6 of the housing 2 has a pair of arms 42, which arms are pivotally mounted in the members 44, each which arm has a soft. sponge-like member 46 on the lower end thereof. each which member 46 is pressed against an car by a spring 48. which is attached to the respective arms 42 in the housing 6 so as to prevent solution from entering the ears. I
The sleeve seal 30. is secured to shaft 27 and has a sprocket 35 secured thereto. The sprocket 35 is driven by a chain 50 that surrounds another sprocket 52 on reversible motor 54 and the sprocket 35.
The timing ofthe arcuatc movement ofthe U-shaped conduits 32 is had by the use of a reverse switch 56 which has an arm 57 which alternately engages outstanding projections 58 and 60 on disc 61 on sleeve seal 30 secured to shaft 27, as will best be seen in FIGS. 7 and 8, which enables the solution to be sprayed outward from perforations 36 onto the head H.
Conduit System The conduit system, as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 7, provides the respective hot and cold water conduits 62 and 64, which conduits direct hot and cold through check valve 72. A Y-type fitting 74 is within conduit 68 which permits the manifold 76 to selectively direct a solution from any one of the containers 78, 80 or 82 into conduit 68, by starting one of the motorized pumps 84, 86 or 88 to direct a solution outward through one of the respective conduits 90, 92 or 94. Each of the conduits 90, 92 and 94 is provided with a check valve 96, 98 and 100 respectively, so as to prevent back flow of any of the solutions into any of the containers, once it has been discharged therefrom. The solutions are pumped into conduits 102 and 104. The conduit 102 services as a reservoir, such as a stand pipe 106, to maintain the desired amount of solution in pipes 102 and 104. An open bottom trap 108 is provided within the stand pipe 106 so as to trap air and present a pressure on conduit 110 which connects with the open bottom trap 108 and a diaphragm chamber 112, having a diaphraph (not shown) which operates a pressure sensitive switch 114 associated with the diaphragm chamber to close an electrical circuit 116 to actuate the solenoid 71 to operate the valve 70.
When the solution has reached a predetermined height in stand pipe 106, the solenoid 71 will close valve 70 until the trapped liquid within stand pipe 106 feeds down through pipes 102 and 104 to a pump 118, which directs the solution through pipe 119 into a three-way valve 120 and into pipe 121, thence into hose or conduit 28 and thence through sleeve seal 30 into hollow shaft 27. The valve 120 is actuated by a solenoid 117, which valve is of the character to normally remain in the position as shown in HO. 7, unless electrieal current is directed to the solenoid 117 thereof to move it into drain position to connect conduit 119 with conduit 129, upon de-energizing of the solenoid the valve will return to the position as shown in FIG. 7. With the solution passing through hollow shaft 27 into perforated U-shaped conduits 32, the solution will be sprayed outward and onto the head H of the patron.
Before initially starting the treatment of the patrons hair and scalp with a solution, an adjustable relief valve 121C within pipe 1213 is opened sufficiently to permit the pump 118 to circulate the solution through the pipes 119, 121 and 1218 until the solution is properly heated by the circulation of the warm solution from pipe 68 into the system. When the proper temperature of solution has been attained, the adjustable relief valve 121C is closed to such extent that the major portion of the solution will be directed into pipe 28 and out through perforations 36 in conduit 32.
The solution discharged from the perforations 36 of conduit 32 will be caught within the housing 4 and directed through drain 22, and with the three-way solenoid controlled valve 122 in the position as shown in FIG. 7, the solution will be directed through conduit 124, check 'valve 126, and be recirculated through pump 118 to continue discharging solution out through perforations 36 of the U-shaped conduits 32 as the U- shaped conduits move arcuately to spray the solution onto the hair and scalp of the head within the housing 2. When this has been recycled and circulated the desired amount of time, the solenoid 234 is energized by closing switch 238 and three-way valve 122 is moved from the position as shown in FIG. 7 to a position to connect conduit 22 and conduit 123, whereupon, the
pump 128, which is power driven by motor 128A, will discharge the liquid from housing 4 into conduit 130 and thence into conduit 132 to be disposed of, such as into a drain, sump, or the like.
A pipe 129 leads from three-way valve 120 to a fitting 131 (FIG. 8), then when it is desired to drain the system. the three-way valve 120 is moved to a position to connect with pipes 119 and 129, whereupon. the pump 118 may be started and the system drained. including the reservoirs 78, 80 and 82.
Electrical System The electrical system. as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 9, has a timer. designated generally by the numeral 134. which is conventional and is of the general character shown in bulletin 345 of the G. W. Eagle Systems Division of the Gulf and Western Industries. lncorporated. Bulletin 345 shows a timing device for timing operations in a cycle. wherein the operation will continue for one cycle and stop. The model 345 timer is of a modular character and any number of cams and switches may be used. Therefore. for the sake of brevity, a timer with six cams and six operating switches. has been shown. however. the solution containers 78, 80 and 82 may be of any desired number. but. each ad ditional container will require an additional cam and switch element to operate a motor to direct solution therefrom. In this manner. six or eiht containers. for color treatment solution. several varieties of shampoo. rinse and other hair and scalp treatment solutions. may be used.
The electrical system as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 9 includes the source of current which is usually 110 to 120 volts, and comprises electrical conductors 136 and 138 and an appliance or apparatus safety ground wire 140. A safety switch 142 is within electrical conductor 136 and has a safety feature. that is when the hood or cover 6 is open the switch 142 is opened which breaks the circuit. The electrical conductor 136 is connected with a branch circuit wire 144 which leads through momentary contact switch 146, which switch is a push type momentary, contact switch which directs current from electrical conductor 136 to and through electrical conductor 144 through electrical switch 146, thence through electrical conductors 150 and 232 to a terminal 152 on timer 134. The momentary contact switch 146 shunts the current to initially start the motor 154 to enable switch 230 to close so that the electrical motor 154 which drives the cams within the timer 134 will operate the timer. The motor 154 is also connected with electrical conductor 156 so as to complete a circuit. The electrical conductor 136 also connects with a terminal 158 on timer 134 so the electricity will be directed through switch 160, which will be opened and closed by the cams within timer 134 which will direct current out through electrical conductor 162 to the central terminal 163 of selector switch 164. The selector switch, for purpose of illustration, only, shows one off position and three contacts, however, as many contacts may be had on the selector switch as there are solution jars and pumps, such as shown in FIG. 8. The selector switch 164 shows terminals 166, 168 and 170, therefore, upon moving the conductor arm 172 of the selector switch 164 to connect with the desired terminal 166, 168 or 170, the electrical current is directed through electrical conductors 174, 176 or 178, respectively, to motors 180, 182 or 184 to drive the respective pumps 84, 86 or 88, depending upon the position of the switch conductor arm 172.
A switch 186 connects to a terminal 188 on timer 134. therefore, when the switch is actuated to close the circuit. current is directed through electrical conductor 190 which leads to the center pole of a two pole. dou- 5 ble throw switch 56, so when the switch is closed in one position. current is directed through electrical conductors 194 and 196 to operate reversible motor 54 in one direction. and when the switch 56 is closed and in the opposite position to close a circuit through electrical conductors 198 and 200., the motor 54 will rotate in the opposite direction.
The sleeve seal 30 has a disc-like member 61 thereon. which disc-like member has outwardly extending projections 58 and 60 thereon which are in position to engage arm 57 on the reversing switch 56 so as to move the reversing switch from one closed position to close a circuit through electrical conductors 194 and 196 to reversible motor 54 to another closed position to close the circuit through electrical conductors 198 and 200 to reversible motor 54, which. in turn. will rotate the sleeve seal and the hollow shaft 27 arcuatcly the desired number of degrees so that the perforated spray conduit 32 will spray water and solution onto the hair and scalp of the head H within housing 2. The hose 28 is flexible to enable arcuate movement of the sleeve seal 30, however. a seal is formed between the hose and the inner diameter of the sleeve so that the U-shapcd perforated conduit 32 may be rotated 360 about its axis. i1 dcsired.
A motor 210 is connected to the main pump 118 for directing solutions. under pressure. onto the hair and scalp. as will best be seen in FIGS. 7 and 9. These solutions may be selectively directed onto the head H ofthc patron by moving arm 172 into contact relation with 35 one of the contacts 166, 168 or 170. The motor 210 is within a circuit 212 and extends between electrical conductor 138 and terminal 214 and the pump motor is selectively operated by the operation ofa cam within timer 134 to open and close switch 216.
A thrce-way valve 120 is provided within the fluid conduit system. which valve is actuated by solenoid 117 and is within the circuit 218 which extends between electrical conductor 138 and terminal 220 on timer 134. A switch 222 connects between electrical conductor 136 and terminal 220, so upon actuation of a cam within timer 134 the switch 222 is opened and closed in programmed relation to cause the solenoid 117 to actuate divcrter valve 120, to either selectively direct solution to the pipe 121 leading to the perforated U-shaped solution applicator 32, and to pipe 1218 leading to relief valve 121C or into the drain pipe 129, which drain pipe is connected to a disposal conduit 132, as desired. A switch 114 is provided within an electrical circuit 224 leading between the electrical conductor 138 and a terminal 226 which is associated with a timer switch 228 which connects with an electrical conductor 136 leading to the timer 134.
As the cams within the timer 134 rotate, the switch 228 is opened and closed in programmed sequence. and with the switch 114 closed. the conductor 116 and solenoid 71 are energized. which will open valve 70 to direct water of predetermined temperature therethrough and through check valve 72 and through conduit 68 into conduit 104, pump 118, conduit 119, three-way valve 120 and into hose 28. The hose is of such flexibility as to normally permit arcuate movement of pipe 27 to move 360 or more, however. the
hose is so fitted in sleeve as to form a fluid tight seal. even though the sleeve is rotated continuously in one direction.
a diaphragm 112 is pressure sensitive to the rise of the water level in trap 108 within stand pipe 106. which pressure is conveyed through tubular conduit ill) to the diaphragm to actuate switch ll4, which. in turn. energizes solenoid 7| to actuate valve 70.
The switch 230 is of a character that is cam actuated. which cam makes one revolution to open the switch 230 to break the circuit. whereupon. the motor I54 will stop. The timer will not start again until the push button switch 146 is momentarily closed. This shunts the current from conductor 150 to conductor 232 which causes the motor 154 to initially start and close switch 230. which motor will then continue to run until a revolution is completed and the scitch 230 is opened by a cam within the timer.
A solenoid actuated valve [22 has a solenoid 234 connected thereto. which solenoid is within the circuit 236 which extends between electrical conductor U8 and switch 238 to enable the switch 238 to be manually closed to connect electrical conductors 136 and I38 which simultaneously energize solenoid 234 to actuate the valve 122 and to start pump motor 128. which valve is moved to a position to drain the lower portion 4 of the housing 2, however. the valve is ofa character that when the solenoid is de-energized. the valve will be moved back to a position as indicated in dotted outline in FIG. 7.
Operation With the head H of the patron being positioned within housing 2 as indicated in FIG. I. and resting on cushioned headrest 8, the cover 6 of the housing is closed. which will close safety switch 142. Switch 146 is then momentarily depressed which will shunt the electricity from electrical conductors I36 and ISO across switch 230 to energize electrical conductors 232 to timer motor 154 which will form a circuit through electrical conductor I56 to electrical conductor 138. This will cause the programmed sequence timer 134 to start rotating at a relatively slow rate of speed. usually requiring about three minutes to complete on revolution of the cam assembly. Then with the selector switch I64 manually positioned to close contact between electrical conductor 162 and electrical conductor 178, the switch arm 172 is moved into contact relation with switch point 170. Electricity from the electrical conductor 160 which will start motor 184 of pump 88 so as to direct the solution from the container 82 through check valve 100 into conduit 76 leading into pipe 68, to be mixed with the water therein. With a reserve supply of solution of the proper temperature in pipe 68, the solution is directed into pipes 102 and 104 with the solution level building up within stand pipe 106 to exert pressure into open ended trap 108 to cause hydrostatic pressure to chamber a diaphragm in diaphragm actua tor 112, thereby to selectively open or close switch 114 to control the flow of solution into pipe 104, whereupon. the pump 118 directs solution through pipes I l9, l2] and conduit or hose 28 through a sleeve 30, which is a fluid seal. to perforated U-shaped member 32 to discharge the solution out through perforations 36 onto the head H.
When the desired amount of the first solution is directed onto the head, the selector switch 164 is moved to a second position to direct another solution onto the head and then into a third position or to other positions (not shown). whereupon, the patron may receive rinse water initially onto the hair if desired. and a shampoo from one container, a rinse solution from another container and a color treatment solution from a further container. however. while only three containers are shown. it is to be understood that this is for the purpose of simplifying the illustration and description. and that the containers may be of any desired number and the switch may have any desired number of points to accommodate the number of solution containers.
When the solutions have been applied in accordance with the selector switch settings, the timer will continue to run so as to perform the above stated functions in sequence in accordance with the setting of the cams within the timer to open switches 160, I86, 222, 216 and 228 with the switch 230 being programmed to stop the timer upon the completion of one revolution. in accordance with the present timer.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for applying solutions to the human head comprising:
a cabinet having an upstanding front wall;
a housing including a lower housing part and an upper housing part. said lower housing part having upstanding front and rear walls;
support means securing said lower housing part to said upstanding front wall on said cabinet with said cabinet front wall and said housing rear wall being substantially parallel to each other other for supporting said front wall on said lower housing part at a height convenient for the head of a patron sitting in a semi-reclining position;
a hollow sleeve extending through said front wall of said cabinet and said rear wall of said lower housing part, said hollow sleeve having a first end positioned in said lower housing part and a second end positioned behind said front wall of said cabinet. the major axis of said hollow sleeve intersecting said head of said patron substantially normal thereto;
a first conduit rotatably mounted in said hollow sleeve and having a first end extending into said lower housing part beyond said first end of said hollow sleeve and a second end extending beyond said second end of said hollow sleeve;
at least one arcuate. perforate conduit connected to said first end of said first conduit for spraying solutions on said head of said patron;
a sleeve seal secured to said second end of said first conduit for imparting rotation thereto;
a flexible hose fitted into said sleeve seal in fluid tight relationship therewith and in fluid communication with said first conduit for conveying solutions to said first conduit and said at least one arcuate, perforate conduit; and
motor means connected to said sleeve seal for imparting rotation thereto.
2. An apparatus as stated in claim 1, including:
a substantially horizontal, rearwardly-extending.
cushioned head support means affixed to said housing front wall for supporting said head of said patron.
3. An apparatus as stated in claim 2, wherein:
said patron for preventing solutions from passing outward thereby; and
spring means connected to said haffle and to said front wall of said lower housing part for biasing said baffle upwardly.
6. An apparatus as stated in claim 1 including:
a pair of soft. sponge-like members pivotally mounted on said upper housing part; and
spring means connected to said sponge-like members for pressing them against the ears olsaid patron to prevent solutions from entering said ears.

Claims (6)

1. Apparatus for applying solutions to the human head comprising: a cabinet having an upstanding front wall; a housing including a lower housing part and an upper housing part, said lower housing part having upstanding front and rear walls; support means securing said lower housing part to said upstanding front wall on said cabinet with said cabinet front wall and said housing rear wall being substantially parallel to each other other for supporting said front wall on said lower housing part at a height convenient for the head of a patron sitting in a semi-reclining position; a hollow sleeve extending through said front wall of said cabinet and said rear wall of said lower housing part, said hollow sleeve having a first end positioned in said lower housing part and a second end positioned behind said front wall of said cabinet, the major axis of said hollow sleeve intersecting said head of said patron substantially normal thereto; a first conduit rotatably mounted in said hollow sleeve and having a first end extending into said lower housing part beyond said first end of said hollow sleeve and a second end extending beyond said second end of said hollow sleeve; at least one arcuate, perforate conduit connected to said first end of said first conduit for spraying solutions on said head of said patron; a sleeve seal secured to said second end of said first conduit for imparting rotation thereto; a flexible hose fitted into said sleeve seal in fluid tight relationship therewith and in fluid communication with said first conduit for conveying solutions to said first conduit and said at least one arcuate, perforate conduit; and motor means connected to said sleeve seal for imparting rotation thereto.
2. An apparatus as stated in claim 1, including: a substantially horizontal, rearwardly-extending, cushioned head support means affixed to said housing front wall for supporting said head of said patron.
3. An apparatus as stated in claim 2, wherein: said head support means has a pair of downwardly extending legs removably mounted on said front wall of said lower housing part.
4. An apparatus as stated in claim 1, including: a second arcuate, perforate conduit connected to said first end of said first conduit 180* from said at least one arcuate perforate conduit.
5. An apparatus as stated in claim 1, including: a baffle mounted on said front wall of said lower housing part, said baffle having an elastomeric seal secured along the upper edge thereof, said elastomeric seal being contoured to fit about the neck of said patron for preventing solutions from passing outward thereby; and spring means connected to said baffle and to said front wall of said lower housing part for biasing said baffle upwardly.
6. An apparatus as stated in claim 1 including: a pair of soft, sponge-like members pivotally mounted on said upper housing part; and spring means connected to said sponge-like members for pressing them against the ears of said patron to prevent solutions from entering said ears.
