CH ECK-VALVE AN D TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,503, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed July 30, 1888.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs K. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Valves and Traps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to checkvalves in the varied adaptation of devices of that class, though more particularly having relation to traps for sewers; and it consists in the improved construction of check-valves in respect to the form of valve body or casing and arrangement of operative parts, so that the same, when located in sewer mains or branches, may be fitted to operate as traps therein, as hereinafter more fully described, my object being to prevent more efiectually than heretofore the backward flow of sewage or gases and the deposit of sediment or passage of vermin.
In the drawings, Figure l is an exterior side view or elevation of my improveddevice with the casing partly broken away, so as to eX- hibit a portion of the interior and the opera tive parts therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical trans verse sectional view taken on dotted line or a; in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and are enlarged or de tail views of detached parts.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts wherever they may appear in the aforesaid views.
Letter A represents the outer casing or body, the central portion forming the valvechamber wherein the valve-seat is situated and which contains the operative parts, said chamber having an orifice on the upper side provided with the detachable cap or cover B to admit of access thereto, the extremities of casing respectively corresponding with the bell and spigot ends of an ordinary sewer-pipe, so that the device may be placed in position in connection with the pipes of sewers.
As more clearly shown in Fig. 1, the casing is so constructed that the inlet or the bell end, when said casing is set 011 the proper level, occupies a much higher plane than the outletor spigot end, the neck of inlet having a considerable incline, which maybe of about thirty Serial No. 281,365. (No modeli) degrees with the horizontal, at the junction of which with valve-chamber thevalve-seat is situated slightly inclined inwardly, the bottom of said valve-chamber also descending rapidly to the lower level of the spigotrbottom, so that a water-line reaching the top of the outlet would fall below the interior or bore of pipe connected with bell at inlet.
By C is represented the valve-gate, which consists of a metal disk, preferably of brass,
with a slight annular projection on its inner surface, and having upon the opposite or outer surface, somewhat above the center, a rectangular projection, c, in which is formed a concavity serving as one half, a detachable portion secured by screws having corresponding cavity, serving as the other half, of a socket to receive the spherical lug-provided lower extremity of the hinge or arm D, the upper end of which is T-shaped, and which is suspended from the hooked projections or lugs (Z (Z at top of valve-chamber and edge of central orifice before mentioned, the cover B likewise having a lug, b, projecting downward sufficiently to engage with the said T- shaped end and prevent its accidental dislodgment, said cover B being internally dished or recessed, so as to form a secondary upper chamber or extension of valve-chamber proper.
The operation of device is as follows: When placed in position in connection with the pipes of sewer, as previouslydescribed, with the bot tom of easing set on a true level or on a slight grade not sufficient to cause the valve-seat to assume a truly vertical position, the valve disk or gate 0, though remaining closed upon said seat when at rest, through action of gravity, so as to effectually seal the opening and prevent the passage of gases or' the return or backing up of sewage, is susceptible of movement by very slight pressure from within, so as to readily allow the passage of sewage flowing from direction of inlet. This delicacy of operation and a certain amount of selfadjustment are obtained by means of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the hinge hereinbefore described. The spherical joint permits the gate to oscillateand swing partly open without moving the hinge arm D, which retains its previous position until considerable opening of the valve, and conseable recesses within socket being provided,
for their reception, though they permit the described movement olgatc, prevent the rotation or lateral swinging 0f same to an objectionable degree. The gate would otherwise be liable to turn in closing, so as to approach the valve-seat edgcwise, the result being imperfeet contact and failure to properly close the opening.

The combination of the parts hereinabove recited, viz: the casing or body A, having inclined neck or inlet and rapidly-descending valve-chamber bottom, the recessed or chambered cover B, the valve disk or gate 0, havin g central projection with concavity or socket formed therein, and the hinge-arm or valvestem 1), having T- shaped upper extremity and spherical lug-provided lower termination, these said. parts bein constructed, relatively arranged, an d open-a1 ed substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
