D. E. TERRILL.
UHANGEABLE BILL OF FARE.
NO. 396.716. Patented Jan. 22, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT Orrica DELANCY E. TERRILL, OF COPENHAGEN, NEXV YORK'.
CHANGEABLE TBILL OF FARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,'716, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed November 6, 1888. Serial No. .290,0'78. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, DELANGY E. TERRILL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Copenhagen, in the countyof Lewis and State of New I York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in hangeable Bills ot Fare; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acconpanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which t'o-n a part ot' this specification.
This invention rclates to certain new and useful iinprovenents in changeable bills ot' fare for use upon the tables ot' hotels and resi taurants; and it has particular reference to that class of devices ot' this characterin which the nanes of the several articles constituting the bill of fare are printed or otherwise suitably atfixed to the faces of strips of wood or metal, and so arrang'ed as to be capable of reinoval or change 'froni time to tine when such ren'oval or change niay 'for any reason be either necessary or desirable.
The object ot' the present invention is to general'ly sinplit'y and iin prove upon the con struction oi" this class oi" devices.
A 'further and the innnediate object ol'the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive bill ot' fare, in which the interchangeable strips are contained within suitable trays adapted to be tted within suitable metallic cases hinged t:g*ether at their adjacent edges, so as to resemble the covers of a boolv'. The edges ot' the cases are provided with suitable fiauged edgeswhieh overlap the edg'es oi' the trays containing the strips, and both the overlapped edges and the outer 'faces of the cases are designed to be eng'raved or otherwise ornanented.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention nay pertain, the same consists in the peculiar combinathins and in the novel construction, arrangenent, and adaptation of parts, all as more i'ully hereinafter described, shown in the acconpanying drawings, and then specifically defined 'in the appended claim.
The invention clearly illustrated in the acoompanying drawings, which, with the letters O' reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a changeable bill of fare constructed in accordance with niy invention, the same being shown as partly open. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the trays removed.
Reference now being had to the details ot' the drawings by letter, A designatesa shallow tray, made preferably of sheet metal, the ends and one of the sides ot' the tray being turned up, so as to form the ends and side B B and 1, the upper edges ot which are designed to be flush with the face of the glass forning the covering of the strips within the tray when in, use.
D D are stri ps, oi' either wood or metal, each havin printed or otherwise at'lixed to its outer face the name of an article. These strips are of such length as will serve to perinit of their being fitted transversely within the tray, the same being placed in and removed 'I'OI'H the tray at the open side of the same.
E is a plate, of glass or other transparent substance adapted to such use, which forms a eovering for the strips D.
The side C oi' the tray is provided upon its outer face with a spring, F, one end of which spring is secured to the side of the tray 'near one ot' its ends, and the spring is extended along the side of the tray, as shown, with its free end bearin against the same.
G G are metallic cases adapted to receive the trays just described. These cases are open at their lower ends, so as to pernit the trays to be slid into place, while the sides and upper end ol' the cases are extended upward and are bent over, so as to enbrace the sides and upper end of the tray. This overlapping edge H may be suitably ornamented, so as to form a Very neat and attractive 'trane for the inclosed bill of fare.
It will be readily understood that when the tray is placed in position within the case G the spring F, which is secured to the side of the tray, as shown, will bear against the side of the case, and will thus serve to retain the tray in place.
If 'for any reason it should be considered as desirable, instead ot' enploying two of the cases, as I have shown, any desired number of similar cases may be used instead, each of the said cases being hinged to the edge of the next ease in the series, thus forming a folder instead of a book form.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim to be new is- As an 'improved article of inanufacture, the
herein-described changeable bill of fare, eonprising, in combination, a series of trays, each having its en ds and one of its sides turned up, as described, and a spring Secured at one of its ends to the side of the tray, relnovable inedges of its turned-up sides and end turned nwardly, so as to retain and form a frame for r the tray containing the indicating-strips, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I a'Ffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
