DUST-COLLECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,368, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed April 27, 1889. Serial No. 308,849. (No model.)
To all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL G. Rnrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Dust-Collector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dust-collectors for mills of that class which are operated by an air-blast from a suction-fan; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, durable, and efficient in operation.
lVith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved dust-collect-or, parts of the same having been broken away for the purpose of showing the invention more clearly. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 00 0c of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is another horizontal section, but taken through the tangential opening.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
The casing of my improved dust-collector consists, mainly, of a funnel-shaped hopper A, the upper edge of which is provided with a laterally-extending flange B.
C is a cylindrical shell, of a diameter correspondin g to that at the upper edge of the hopper and provided at its lower edge with a flange D, which is suitably connected to the flange B of the hopper A by means of bolts or rivets. The upper edge of the cylindrical shell C is likewise provided with a flange F, to which the top or dome G is bolted or otherwise suit ably attached. The cylindrical shell C is provided with a tangential opening II, which is to be connected by means of suitable pipes or duets with the discharge-opening of a suction-fan, which latter is in turn to be connected with the rooms from which the impure or dust-laden air is to be taken. This fan and its connections, however, have not been shown in the drawings hereto annexed, as their relative arrangement-is well understood.
I designates an interior funnel-shaped hopper, the upper edge of which is suitably connected with the upper edge of the exterior hopper or casin g A, but the lower end of which terminates in an opening J some distance above the discharge-opening K at the lower end of the exterior funnel or casing A. It will thus be seen that a space L is left between the walls of the two hoppers, the purpose of which will be presently made clear.
The inner funnel-shaped hopper I is provided with several circumferential series of slits or openings M H, adjoining which are formed flanges N N, which may be struck up from the metal of which the said funnel or hopper is composed, and which are formed on the sides of the slits or openings I toward which the blast of air is directed. It will thus be seen that the said flanges form ledges upon which the dust may lodge, and from which it will be discharged through the slits or openings next below or through the bottom opening K into the exterior shell or casing A. WVith this end in view it will also be seen that the slits or openings of each circumferential series are arranged at an angle or inclination to those in the series next below. From the flanges or ledges of the lowermost series the dust will be discharged directly through the opening J at the bottom of the funnel-shaped shell I into the outer shell A, from whence the dust is eventually removed through the opening K at the bottom of the same.
The top or dome G of. the device has a central opening 0, to which is attached a downwardly-extending cylindrical tube P, which extends any desired distance into the interior funnel-shaped shell I, as will be seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This cylinder forms adeflector for the blast of air as it enters the upnel-sha'ped hopper I, Where the said dust will be intercepted and caused to lodge against the flanges or ledges N, from Whence it will be deflected eitherthrough the slits M or through the opening J into the exterior hopper or casing, from whence it is finally discharged through the opening K. The air, having been relieved of the dust and impurities, escapes through the tube P.
Having thus described my invention, I c1ai1n 1. In a dust-collector having a tangential inlet, the combination of an outer shell or casing, an interior funnel-shaped hopper provided with interiorly arranged inclined flanges or ledges, and slits or openings adjoining the same and having an opening at the bottom, substantially as herein described, and for the purposeset forth.
2. Ina dust-collector having a tangential inlet, the herein-described f unnel-shaped hopper, arranged Within asuitable casing and provided with circumferentially arranged slits or, openings, and struck-up flanges or ledges'adjoining the same on theside from which the air-blast is directed, substantially as and for the, purpose herein .set forth.
In a dust-collectorhaving a tangential inlet, the combination, with an exterior funnel-shaped shell or casing, of an interior funnel-shaped hopper attached to the upper edge ,of said shell or casing and terminating at some distanceabox-e the bottom of the latter, Wh ere b'y an an nular space or com partm cut is formed betweenthe said casing and hopper, said inner hopper being provided With flanges to inter'cept or gather the dust and convey it into said annularspace or compartment, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a dust-collector having a tangential inlet, the combination, with an exterior funnel-shaped casing, of the interior funnelshaped hopper attached to the upper edge of said casing and terminating at some distance from the lower end of said casing, said hopper being provided with circumferentially arranged slits or openings and having struckup ledges or flanges adjoining said openings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 5. In a dust-collector, the combination of the funnel-shaped casin g and the interior funnelshaped hopper connected at their upper edges, said shell and hopper having openings at their lower ends'andthe interior hopper being provided with circumferentially-arranged slits or openings, and struck-up ledges ,orflanges adjoining the same, With the cylindrical casing attached to the upper edge-of the funnelshaped shell and having a tangential opening for the admission of dust-laden air, andadefleeting and escape tube extending downwardly from the topof said cylindrical casing, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. r
