PISTON-ROD PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,399, dated Apri1 22, 1890.. Application filed December 26, 1889. fierial No. 335,090. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM J. SYPHER, of Iron Mountain, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Piston-Rod Packing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The improved packing is a peculiar combination of rings or parts of rings, whereby what is termed a ring-packing which wears evenly is obtained, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a drill having the improved packing. The drill-chuck, piston-rod, and piston are shown in elevation, the cylinder in section, and one of the halves of the cylinder-head is removed, and only that portion of the drill which is more immediately in connection with the improvement is exhibited; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the drill. The view is at right angles to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a view in perspective of the outer one of the packing-rings, and Fig. 5 a view in perspective of the inner one of the packingrings. The last two views are upon an enlarged scale.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The improvement is shown applied to a drill A, which, saving as it may be modified or supplemented by the improvement, is of a familiar form, its cylinder being shown at B, its piston at O, piston-rod at D, and its drillchuck at E 5 and F F represent the two halves of the cylinder-head at that end of the cylinder which is toward the chuck. The bolts ff serve to unite the halves F F, and G G rep resent the tie-rods which unite cylinder and its heads, one of which heads is not shown.
The improved packing is composed of an inner ring II and an outer ring I, constructed and combined as follows: The, inner ring is in four parts h h b 77/3. The outer ring is in two semicircular parts i 2'. They are formed by dividing the ring I in the direction of its length.
The four parts of the ring H are produced by dividing the ring both in the direction of its length and crosswise, and particularly as follows: The parts h h 72 77. are each substantially semicircular. The part h may have no projection. The part his notched at 72. The parts 71 h have each a projection 71. and when the parts are combined to form the ring H the projections 71 k enter the notch h and the joints h 716, between the parts h h, are out of line with the joints h 7L7 between the parts 72 72. The cylinder-head F F is recessed at f to receive the rings II I, which are applied to the piston-rod, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the ring I-I encircling the pistonrod and the ring I encircling the ring H. The
cylinder-head is further recessed at f to form a steam-passage encircling the outer ring I. The passage f is connected with the interior of the cylinder B by means of one or more passages f f so that the steam from the cylinder canpass into the passage f and there act to compress the outer ring upon the inner ring, and the inner ringin turn upon the piston-rod.
The special advantage derived from the described construction is this: The inner ring H can in the operation of the drill turn around upon the piston-rod freely, and can also turn around within the outer ring I, and in consequence the ring I-I wears smoothly upon the piston-rod, and the two rings wear smoothly upon each other, and a very efficient packing is readily obtained. The re cess f confines the rings II I endwise in place, as shown.
Owing to the described manner of constructing and combining the four parts of the inner ring, the joints being the parts of the outer ring can never come into coincidence with all of the joints of the inner ring at once.
