SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,842, dated February 3, 1891.
Application filed April 21,1890- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARQUIS J. TODD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented cer:
tain new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in harrows, having reference more especially to the form employing spring-teeth; and it has for its object to provide a pivotal adjustment for the barrow-teeth r 5 without impairing the solidity or strength of the frame, the bars comprising the latter being firmly connected together and the toothclip located at one side and independent of such connection.
The invention comprises a frame composed of zigzag bars or straps, firmly united at their parallel or contiguous angles on either side of a longitudinally-grooved hearing.
The invention also comprises a two-part clip having a pivotal or movable section engaging the stationary section or hearing for the frame bars or straps, said movable section having a horizontal seat for a harrow-tooth, and a bolt provided with an outer hooked or 0 wedge-shaped endforbinding such tooth down on said seat and against the outer side of said movable section, and uniting the latter to the stationary section. 4
The invention further comprises a two-part 3 5 clip,the movable section of which is provided with a horizontal ledge or support having a groove or recess and forming a seat for the inner end of a harrow-tooth, which latter has a correspondingly-shaped portion fitting said groove or recess, and a bolt having a hooked end binding said tooth down on said seat and against the side of said movable section.
The invention further comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the harrow-frame, composed of metallic bars or straps a of zigzag form.
13 is the barrow-tooth clip, composed of two parts or sections b b, the former being stationary and the latter movable. Upon the inner face of the stationary section b are formed upper and lower series of ratchetteeth b and on the opposite face of the movable section b are ratchet-teeth b", which engage or intermesh the-teeth 19 The stationary section b, being designed to serve as a bearing for the bars or straps of the harrowframe, is provided with inner and outer horizontal grooves or recesses Z), wherein fit the straight parallel portions of said bars or straps a. The latter are provided with holes or openings coincident with similar holes or openings in sections 1) b, through which is passed pivotbolt 0. These bars or straps are firmly united or held together at their parallel or eontiguous angles by rivets b passed therethrough Y on either side of the stationary section or bearing 1). The movable section b is provided on its outer face with a horizontal ledge or support d, having a lower inclined tapering surface, as shown, said ledge forming a seat for the harrow-tooth. This ledge is provided with a central transverse groove or depression d, wherein fits a similarly-shaped bent or creased portion d of a barrow-tooth E.
The pivot-bolt O is provided with a hooked or wedge-shaped end D, which hugs or impinges the outer side edge of the harrowtooth and the edge of the ledge or support, whereby said tooth is firmly bound down on said ledge and against the side of the movable section of the clip by the tightening of the bolt. The hooked end of the bolt, being wedge-shaped and engaging the tapering under side of the ledge, binds the tooth down onits seat, and thus firmly holds the same in position. The tooth at its inner edge fits between ledge d and an upper flange (1 parallel therewith, said flange being employed to strengthen the connection and give additional support for the inner end of the tooth. By tightening the nut on bolt C the latter firmly binds tooth E down on its seat and against the side of the clip, and also unites the movable section of said clip to the stationary section thereof. 'If desired/the rivets b may be dispensed with, and in this event the pivot-bolt C will also firmly unite,
the bars or straps of the harrow-frame at their contiguous angles.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the movable section of the clip can be freely revolved or turned on its pivot-bolt, and that by means of the latter and the intermeshing teeth of the sections of the clip, the harrowtooth. can be-adj usted and held rigid at any desired point. It will also be observed that the harrow-tooth is held in place between the lower ledge and upper flange of the movable section of the clip, and that the bolt binding the outer edge thereof firmly clamps it down on itsseat and against the side of the clip as against accidental displacement.
Another advantage of my invention is that toeffect the adjustment of the tooth it is not necessary to loosen the bars or straps composing the harrow-frame, and hence the rigidity and strength of the frame are not impaired in the least. This is capable of accomplishment by reason of the movable section of the clip being independent of the stationary section, the latter being secured between .two of such bars or straps. Hence for the purpose of shipment the frame and the har- TOVctQQth and pivotal or movable section of the clip, can be separated without loosening the parts of the frame.
I claim as my invention.-
1. In aspring-tooth harrow,aclip. composed of two sections, one being stationary and the other movable, which latter section is provided with a. horizontal seat for a spring harrow-tooth, and a pivot-bolt having a hooked or wedge-shaped end for engaging such tooth and seat and binding the former down on the latter and against the side of said movable section and' serving as a pivot for said movable section, substantially as set forth.
2. In a spring-toothharrow, a clipcomposed of a stationary section and a movable section having on its outer side a horizontal ledge or support forming a seat for the inner end of a barrow-tooth, said ledge having a tapering under side, and a pivot-bolt having a hooked on wedge-shaped end for engaging-such tooth and the tapering under side of said ledge or support, whereby the tooth is bound down on its seatand against the side of said movable section and said sections are held firmly together, substantially as set forth.
In a spring-tooth harrow, a clip composed oftwo. sections, one being stationary and the other movable, and having intermeshin g ratchet-teeth, said movable section being provided with a horizontal seat for a spring harroW-tooth, and a pivot-bolt having a hookefd or wedge-shaped end for binding such tooth down on said seat and against the side of said movable section and holding said sections firmly together, substantially as set forth.
4. In a spring-tooth harrow, a clip composed of two parts or sections having intermeshing ratchet-teeth, one of said sections being stationary and the other movable, the latter having on its outer side a lower horizontal ledge or support forming a seat and an upper flange between which a harrow-tooth is disposed, and a pivot-bolt having a hooked end for binding said tooth down on said seat and against said outer side of said movable sec tion and holding said sections firmly together, substantially as set forth.
5. In a spring-tooth harrow, a clip having a movable section provided on its outer side with a horizontal ledge or support having a central grooveor depression, the harrowtooth' having a correspondingly-shaped portion fitting said groove or depression, and the pivot bolt having an outer hooked or wedge-shaped end engaging said tooth and ledgeorsupport, substantially as set forth.
6. As an improvement in harro ws, the frame composed of zigzag bars or straps, the clips having each a single stationary section provided with grooves or recesses forsaid bars, between contiguous angles of which said section is located, a movable section located1outside one of said bars Where the said stationary section is secured and supporting a harrowtooth, and a pivot-bolt uniting said sections, substantially as set forth.
7'. The herein-described improved harroW, consisting of the frame composed of bars or straps bent into zigzag form and connected together, the clip having a stationary section provided with ratchet-teeth and disposed between contiguous anglcs of two of said bars or straps, the movablesection having corresponding ratchet-teeth and provided Witha lower ledge or support andan upper flange parallel therewith, and the pivot-bolt having an outer hooked or wedge-shaped end binding the harrow-tooth against the outer side of said movable section and holding the latter in engagement with said stationary section, substantially as set forth.
8. As an improvement in barrows, theframe composed of zigzag bars or straps having-the parallel or contiguous angles of adjoining bars or straps connected together byrivets, stationary sections or bearings located be tween such angles and having grooves or recesses for said bars or straps, and the springteeth pivotally secured to one side of such connection, substantially as set forth.
9. As an improvement in harrows, the frame composed of zigzag bars or straps having the parallel or contiguous angles of adjoining bars or straps connected together, stationary sections or bearings located between such curing the latter to said stationary sections or angles and having grooves or recesses on said bearings, substantially as set forth.
