SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,450, dated December 22, 1891. Application filed February 28, 1891. Serial No. 383.271. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. BROOKE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to permutation-locks; and the object of my invention is to improve the construction of such locks. v

To this end my invention consists of certain features of construction, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective View showing my improved lock in the locked position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the staple with a portion of one member broken away to show the swinging toothed bar, and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the cover-plate.

The case A of the lock is divided into two compartments and is open at one side of one compartment. The larger A2 ot the compartments contains the numbered tumblers B and is closed at the top by a sliding cover-platev wardly-extending rim or shoulder a', the

opening through which is of a size to loosely tit the member of the locking-staple received i in the compartment. The cover-plate B (see Fig. 4) is essentially semicircular in form, and is held in a groove b in the wall of the compartment A2 near the top thereof. The plate is apertured at b2 for the passage of one member of the locking-staple. The tumblers B have central openings to receive one member of the locking-staple and have transverse openings b leading from the central opening, so that when the transverse openings align the locking-staple may be withdrawn. The staple C is reduced near the ends, the reduced portion corresponding in length to the inside length of the lock-case, one member C' being'adapted to enter the compartment A2 and the openings in the tumblers B `and the opposite member C2 being adapted to enter the compartment A. 1 VThe memberv C is slotted longitudinally, and pivoted in the 5 slot near the extreme end is a bar E, which eX- tends longitudinally through. the slot. The bar E is provided with laterallyextending teeth e, adapted to engage the tumblers and prevent the withdrawal of the staple. 6o

The toothed bar E is pivoted at one end, as shown at e', and the opposite end is slotted and held to slide laterally on a pin e2, which holds it in place in the slot of the member C.

It will be observed that the teeth e are inv clined toward the free end of the member, so that they may be easily inserted through the opening in the tumblers; but the opposite sides of the teeth are abrupt and at right angles to the bar E, so that they will engage the 7o tumblers and hold the bar and the staple in place. Abent springF is secured to the back of the bar E and is arranged so that it will normally project from the side of the .mem-

ber C. This spring will yield sufficiently so and allow the bar E to swing into the slot, so 8o that the teeth Will not project from the member C; but after the teeth have passed the inner edges of the tumblers the spring will cause the bar to swing, so that the teeth will engage the tumblers, and the staple cannot be withdrawn until they are turned so as to make the slots b align with the teeth e. The member C2 of the staple which enters the compartment A of the lock-case is provided with a spring-catch G, which is secured to it 9c.

at a point adjacent to the outer end of the lock-case, and the spring is doubled to form a shoulder g, which engages y the shoulder a in the-lock-case, and thus pre'vents'the accidental removal of the staple; but the bore of the compartment A may be of a size to only loosely receive the staple member, and a recess may be provided in the wall of the compartment to receive the shoulder ot' the spring.

The catch G is also bent so as to extend out- Ioo ward through the end of the case, and its extreme end g is bent outward, so thatit may be easily operated by the finger. To permitl of the necessary lateral movement of the catch, the member C2 is recessed opposite the catch, as shown at c', so that to release the catch from the shoulder a it is merely needful to press inward 011 the free end g', which thus with the shoulder ct.

When the lock is suspended-as upon a car-door, for instancethe continual jolting of the car will sometimes cause the tumblers B to turn,so that the slots b will align,and in this case the lock-case would fall from the staple if it were not for the catch G; but this prevents the removal of the staple, and the tumblers will soon turn out of alignment, so that no harm is done. WVhen the lockingstaple is removed from the lock, the coverplate B can be easily removed and the combination chan ged; but when the locking-staple is in place the cover is held and access cannot be had'to the tumblers. l

To insert the staple and fasten the lock, it

disengages the shoulder g from engagement is only needful to push the member Cin through `the tumblers regardless of their position and the member C2 into the compartment A', when the teeth e engage the tumblers and hold the staple securely in place. To remove the staple, the tu mblers are turn ed until the slots b align with .the teeth e, When by simply pressing inward. on the catch G the staple may be removed.

As a precaution against the lock-case and staple becoming separated, a chain D is se cured to a perforated ear a on one end of the lock-case and to a similar earc on the staple C. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a permutation-lock, the combination, with the tumblers, the lock-staple, and the case having its tumbler-holdin g compartment open at the top and provided with an internal groove, of an "apertured cover-plate, substantially as described. v

2. A lock comprising a two-part case, one compartment ofwhich is open at one side and at the top and is provided With a series of tumblers and the other of which is provided with an internal shoulder, and a staple to enter the case, said staple having one member provided with teeth to engage the tumblers andthe other with a spring-catch to engage the internal shoulder, substantially as described.

3. In a lock-case which is dividedinto two compartments, one of which. is open at the top, provided with a groove in its Wall, and adapted to receive tu mblers, and the other of Which is provided With an internal shoulder, the combination, with said case, of an apertured cover-plate and a locking-staple having teeth on one member and a locking-spring on the other member, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination, with the two-part lockcase, one compartment of Which is provided I With tumblers and the other with a shoulder, of a staple adapted to enter the case, one member of the staple having teeth to engage the tumblers and the opposite member having a spring-catch to engage the shoulder, substantially as shown and described.
