JAMES ERNST YEAGER, OF IVAOO, TEXAS.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent bio 474,587, dated May 10, 1892.
Application filed March 31, 1891.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES ERNST YEAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at aco in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to folding beds, and aims to economize space and at the same time provide an ornamental and serviceable piece of furniture, which can also be used for storing the bedclothing and other articles.
The improvement consists of the novel features, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a bed embodying my invention, parts being broken away, showing the bed folded. Fig. 2 is a view showing the bed let down. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the manner of connecting the parts of the head-board. Fig. 4 is a cross-section showing the related position of the bed, side of the base, the spring, and the guard. The base A is hollow and is provided at each side with a vertical standard a and at its front and rear with drop-doors B and 0, respectively. The partition D between the standards forms a support for the beds E and F to close against and formsa screen to separate the beds when thelatter are turned down and to conceal one bed in the event of the other being let down only. The beds are pivotally connected with the uprights G, on which the lower edge of the partition D rests. The twin springs II are approximately U- shaped, and coils h are provided at the upper ends of the vertical members, and arms h project from the coils and pass through The horizontal portions of each spring are provided with loops 7L2, over which the fastenings or staples 72. are driven to hold the spring in place. The guards I project vertically from the bottom of the base, and a sufficient space is left between the opposing sides of their upper ends and the sides of the base to permit of the free action of the springs. These guards retain the springs in proper position and prevent them interfering with the free movements of the beds. The head-boards J and the unfolding of the beds.
Serial No. 387,174. (No model.)
and J are constructed to overlap when the beds are folded, and the portions J are removable to admit of free access to the beds, being held in place by suitable fastenings, as the pins j, which pass through coincident openings in the edges of the head-boards. The legs K, which support the outer ends of of the beds when let down, are pivotally connected with the beds, and are free to swing out when the beds are lowered and fold close to the beds When the same are closed. Openings or slots are provided in the bottoms of the beds. which are closed for the legs to fold into. The drop-doors close against the beds when the latter are folded, and are provided with ledges b and 0, respectively, which extend beneath the beds and lock them in a closed position. These drop-doors also conceal drawers L and M, which slide in the base through the openings closed by the said dropdoors. The springs H assist in the folding Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.- The combination of the base having side standards and an intermediate screen, two beds pivotally connected together and to the said standards at their inner corners and adapted to fold on each other and against the said screen, two drop-doors to close the open sides of the base and adapted to extend beneath the outer corners of the beds and support and hold them in a closed position, and two twin springs, one for each side of the bed, each spring being approximately U- shaped, the parallel members having coils at their upper ends, from which extend arms that pass loosely through keepers on the sides of the said beds, substantially and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the base, the folding beds, and the U-shaped twin springs, of the guards projected up from the bottom of the base and comprising the coils of the springs between their upper ends and the opposed sides ofthe base, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ERNST YEAGER.
