SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,180,dated December 20, 1892.
Application filed March 16, 1892. Serial No. 425,117. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. BUCHNAU, of Columbia, in the county of Maury andState of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My present invention relates to improved devices for supporting thills or shafts of vehieles, when the vehicles are not in use; and my object is to provide a simple article of manufacture which can be readily attached to the axle in position to uphold the shafts, or detached, and incidentally to construct the device so thatit may be employed as a wrench for removing the hub-confining nuts.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the article hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a vehicle showing the axle and thill or shaft,and the position of either of the supporters when applied thereto. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views of supporters showing the axles by dotted lines.
All of the supporters have a straight body A constructed at one end to engage the axle, and at the other end is bent at right angles as at B, and the extremity of B is turned upward again at right angles as at O. The end B it will be observed underlies the shaft near its connection with the axle and upholds it as shown, while part 0 serves to prevent the supporter slipping when in position, and also facilitates its proper adjustment beneath the shaft. Part C may be formed into an ordinary square loop serving as a nut wrench as in Figs. 2 to 6, or may be a solid stub end as in Fig. 7. The end of the supporters which engage the axle may be forked as in Figs. 2 and 7, the bifurcations D, D, being of such size and so divergent as to readily grasp the axle and maintain the supporterin an upright position.
In Fig. 3 the shank, is straight, but has a lateral and downwardly extending hook E projecting from its side about two or three inches from its lower end, which hooks over the axle from the front to the back as shown, and holds the supporter in proper position.
In Fig. 4 one of the bifurcationsFis hinged or pivoted to the body-A and is adjustable by means of a bolt and thumb-screw G so that the supporter may be fitted and clamped on axles of different size.

1n all these forms the parts that engage the axle it will be observed stand in a plane transverse to the parts B. The functions of these devices and the mode of using the sameis obvious from the foregoingdescription and the drawings.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon is 1. A thill supporter consisting of a straight body A having one end formed to removably engage the axle, and its other end B bent at right angles to underlie and uphold the shaft, and the extremity of part B again turned upward at right angles as at 0, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein described thill supporter consisting of the straight body A having bifurcations D at one end adapted to engage the shaft, and its other end turned at right angles to underlie the shaft, and the extremity of the end being turned upward again at right angles, substantially as and for the purpose described.
