UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE BRUNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR PRESERVING FOOD FOR TRANSPORTATION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 8,898, dated July 25, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE BRUNE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented' a new and useful Apparatus for Preserving Edibles, Packages, Ste., for Transportation and Ido hereby declare the same to be fully described and represented in the follow-v ing specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Fignre 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus; Fig. 2, arvertieal section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section; Fig. 4, a section of one of the outer 'side compartments; Fig. 5, a section of the top or bottom compartment; Fig. G, an eleva` tion of one of the inner compartments, and Fig. 7 a section of the same.
In the drawings, A A A' A' represent the sides, and B B the top and bottom compartments for containing sawdust or charcoal. The top and bottom sections or compartments of the outer case are provided with tongues or projections a a, covered with india-rubber or other tight packing, c c, which enter corresponding grooves or recesses, b b, in the upper and lower side sections, A A A A. The side sections or compartments, A A', are also provided with tongues and packing similar to the parts B B, and have corresponding recesses in the sections A A. The several sections,\vhen united and fastened together by means of the bolts d d and nuts ee, comprise the outer case of the apparatus. It has a drainhole, h, in its bottom.
C O, &c., is a frame-work placed within the outer case for sustaining the metallic boxes D D, che., in which ice is to be placed. This metallic box has an aperture,f, through which the ice is conveyed, which is afterward lled with an air-tight plug, g, as shown in the drawin gs.
The apparatus being composed of several sections can be easily taken apart and compactly put away, occupying a small space when not in use.
It will be seen from the above that wh en the apparatus is connected, as described, there is a spacious chamber in the interior, in which may be placed fruit, vegetables, poultry, or other edibles, or packages of merchandise requiring a low and even temperature for transportation, and in which the said edibles or packages have no immediate contact with the Ice.
It will also be"seen that, the temperature within the chamber being about/330, the air soon becomes deoXidized, so thatit consists of nitrogen and carbonio acid, thus preventing any chemical change in the contents ofthe chamber during transportation.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combina-tion and arrangement of the several parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
MAURICE BRUNE.
