Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY RUS- SELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination Slipper and Sandal, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined sandals and slippers, and consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of this invention is to provide a shoe which may be worn with ease and comfort as a house slipper or an analogous form of slipper, or as a sandal, the parts thereof being simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the improved device showing the use of two elastic straps across the vamp. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a part of the sandal or slipper showing a heel in connection therewith.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l, designates the vamp, which has the top portion thereof cut out at intervals as at 2 and 3 to form a strap 4, and to provide securing ends 5, for the attachment of an elastic strap 6. This is of preferred construction, but the strap 4, which as in Fig. l is inelastic, may be made elastic as shown in Fig. 4. l portion of the vamp as at 7, runs down to the sole in advance of the heel portion of the latter and is secured. Where the said vamp runs down to the sole as stated, the two ends of an elastic strap 8, are secured, and said strap extends over the heel portion of the sole, but not entirely the full length thereof to provide for the elasticeffect of the said strap 8, as will be understood. The sole consists of an insole 9, and an outsole l0, between which the lower portion of the vamp is secured and suitably fastened, and said parts of the sole are The rearv holds the vamp portion of the shoe in connection with the foot. The elastic straps form a secure means of holding the combined sandal and slipper in place on the foot, but at the same time ease the foot by yielding to the movements thereof and also cause an automatic adjustment of the parts.

The device herein maybe used for any purpose desired and in any size for both adults and children, and supplied with suitable ornamentations where applicable and formed of any suitable nature or color of material. It has many advantages and among many others are lightness of construction, the facilitywith which it can be put on and taken off the foot, there can be no Happing or rubbing of the heel, and the cheapness of manufacture and sale thereofv will put it in the reach of every one.

In Fig. 4 is shown a heel 1l, applied to the improved sandal or slipper and this form may be preferable for certain uses and by various persons.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a combined slipper and sandal, the coinbination of a vamp, and a sole, the vamp extending downwardly at its rear portions and terminating at opposite sides in advance of the heel-end of the sole and having its instep open or slit, a strap connecting the edges of the slit, and an elastic strap secured to the rear terminating-portions of the vamp adjacent to the sole and extending rearward and upward over the heel-portion of the sole and terminating in advance thereof, whereby it is adapted to be stretched over the heel of the foot when inserted in the slipper, substantially as described.
