MALLET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,607, dated April 18,V 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BARNEY, of Southborough, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mallets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a mallet having the faces or peens covered with leather or equivalent material held in place by rings or ferrules of peculiar construction screwed upon the head of the mallet and over flanges of the leather extending from the edges of the faces down or inward on the side of the head.

The invention will first be described in connection with the annexed drawings forming a part of this specification, and then be pointed ont in the appended claims.

Of the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved mallet. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same partially in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the molded leather facing. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the metallic covering interposed between the face of the peen and leather face or covering. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the metallic ferrule for securing the leather facing upon the face of the peen. Fig. 6 is an end view of the mallet head showing a modification.

The same letters of reference designate the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

d designates a plate of metal shaped to fit upon the face of the peen, and, it may be, to overlap or extend over the edges of the face and inward to a slight extent on the sides of the head. l Y e designates a facing or covering for the face of the peen with the plate CZ in position thereon. The said facing e may be composed of leather, raw hide or similar suitable material, and may be molded into cup shape so as to fit over the face and overlap inward a short distance on the sides in a manner similar to that described with reference to the plate d.

f designates a ferrule which may be of metal, provided on the inner portion g of its interior with a screw thread suited to the screw thread 7i formed on the sides of the ends of the head. Theinterior of the ferrule f adjacent to the screw threaded portion may be offset or chambered, as at z', to receive the edges of the plate d and facing e, and the ends of the mallet head may be turned down to some extent at thepoints where the plate and facing overlap the same. In some instances stripsj (Fig. 6) of metal may be set into the sides of the head and extend from end to end, so thata more durable screw thread for engagement bythe screw thread of the ferrule may be provided. In some cases I may dispense with the metallic plate d, as the facing e will afford the desired protection to the head. The said metallic plate serves to dis-` tribute the concussion resulting from the use of-the invention throughout the face,instead of con lining it to substantiallya single point, as would be the case without its use. It is to be noted that the outer edge or portion of the ferrule is turned inward, and engages the turned over edge of the facing e, so that the farther the ferrule is screwed on the mallet head the more iirmly it grasps and holds the said facing.

A mallet made in accordance with my improvements has been found to be exceedingly durable, and owing to the simplicity of its construction is comparativelyinexpensive.

Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the variations in. form and arrangement of the parts, I declare that what I claim is 1. A mallet having the peen covered with a facing of leather, raw hide, or similar material overlapping the sides and a ferrule provided on theinner surface of its inner portion with a screw-thread, and chambered or offset on the inner surface of the outer portion, whereby the ferrule may be screwed upon the head, and engage the overlapping portion of the facing in the chamber or offset, as set forth.
