To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1', THEODOR SCHIRR- MAOHER, of Bradford, in the county of Mo- Kean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- *tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to'an 'improvementi oil cans; and it is particularly directed to the class employed in filling lamps in which the flow of oil from the spout thereof is automatically stopped by submerging the end of the inlet air passage in the oil within the lamp, and the novel features of my invention will be fully set forth hereinafter and especially referred to in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a can provided with my improved spout, the former being shown tilted in the position when filling a lamp. Fig.2 is a detached view of the spout.
A, designates the can body of the ordinary or any preferred construction having a fixed top B, in which is a filling hole 0, provided with the annular screw threaded flange D.
E, is the improved filling tube having formed between its ends the circular flange F, and immediately above the said shoulder is the screw threaded enlargement F, of less diam eter than the shoulder. The cap m, fitting the flange D, is provided with a central opening through which the said screw threaded enlargement projects and upon which latter the ring-nut G, is run, thereby clamping the cap m,'between the shoulder F, and the ring G. Thus it will be seen that the tube may be easily applied to or removed from the can, and as I prefer to provide the can top with only one opening the same will have to be used both for filling the can and accommodating the filling tube so that the convenient removal of the same will be readily appreciated.
The tube E, is provided with a longitudinal partition H, which extends to nearly the rear tion shown in Fig. 1 when the oil from the can will flow through the opening K, and out through passage I, into the lamp while air will flow into the can from the lamp through the passage J, the current turning at the rear end of the same backward into the passage I, from which it discharges through the opening L, into the can. The'flow of oil from the can continues until the end of tube E, within the lamp has been submerged. The flow of air into the can is then stopped and in consequence thereof the oil ceases to discharge from the same. A slight vacuum is formed in the can owing to the sudden stoppage of the air supply causing the oil to be drawn backward into passage J while upon the automatic stoppage of the oil flow from the passage I, the same is left full of oil. Both tubes are thus stopped with the fluid when the'can is returned to its vertical position, and will remain so stopped until the can is again put into the filling position, as the vacuum in the can will prevent the oil from flowing thereinto from the two passages. The can is thus sealed while not in use in a most efiectual manner.
The filler is automatic in its operation and by its use it is quite impossible to overrun a lamp.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of a can, a spout extending thereinto composed of two passages closed at their inner ends, the partition separating the passages terminating a short distance from their ends, thus placing the tubes in communication at this point, and openings K, L, in the lower tube, substantially as shown and described.
