PISTON-ROD PACKING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,551, dated January 9, 1894.

Be it known that I, CALEB J. KELLEY, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Rod Packing; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in piston packing.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

The accompanying drawing shows a longitudinal section of packing embodying my invention.

In the drawing the reference letter a, indicates the cylinder head having the box 0, through which the piston or valve rod I), reciprocates. This box o,is interiorly recessed at its outer end to form the annular smooth walled chamber h. The exterior of the end of the box 0, is threaded as shown to receive the internally threaded end of the gland or nut 11 which fits on the rod and screws on the said box, and is provided with a shoulder which engages the end of the box. The said nut is recessed from its inner end outwardly to receive the packing e which tightly surrounds the rod. A movable ring f is located around the rod in said recess h in the box 0, with the outer end bearing inwardly and engaging the outer end of the packing e. The inner end of this ring or valve f, is provided with a flange g fitting snugly the interior of the chamber h, so that the outward pressure of the steam or air in the chamber h, behind the enlarged end of said valve which. acts as a piston, will force the outer inwardly beveled end of said valve tightly against the packing around the rod, thereby forcing said packing tightly against the rod and preventing all leakage. It will thus be seen that the valve or ring f, is movable and capable of reciprocation and is constantly forced against the packing always holding it around the rod, and thereby taking up all wear and preventing leakage.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The herein described packing comprising the box on the cylinder head having the enlarged internal recess, the gland containing the packing screwed on the box, and the movable ring surrounding the rod, passing through the box and having the beveled end to engage said packing and press the same against the rod and the flanged end fitted in said recess to receive the pressure from the cylinder, as and for the purpose as set forth.
