SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,778, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed March 18,1893. Serial No. 466,613. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SLACK, of La Grange, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, which will ating parts, by which novel means is produced a general purpose gate in every essential particular complete, being simple, secure, strong, and capable of adjustment at varying heights on the frame, and to different lengths also in the construction thereof, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figures 1. and 2. are different side elevations of the gate in the usual low position. Fig. 3. shows the gate in an elevated position. Fig. at shows details of the roller detached; Fig. 5 details of the hinges detached. Fig. 6 is a top and a side view of latch post.
The panel Ais constructed of parallel, horizontal, and vertical bars, in the usual manner, except that the horizontal bars project at the front end thereof, to adapt them, first, to enter a vertical recess a, at side of latch post B, whereby the gate is held secure in a vertical position when closed, and second, as a means of elevating and supporting the front end thereof, on a bearing h, arranged in said recess a, as shown,whereby sagging of panel A, frame 0, and post D, is effectually prevented.
The rests or supports h have rounded upper corners to permit the rounded ends of the gate bars to rise easily upon the said supports, and thus not only hold the gate firm but take the weight from the rollers when the gate is closed.
0 is a triangular frame which is attached to post D by hinges b, of special adaptation, and peculiar construction, so as to turn on the post as a pivot. The hinges h, are of cross shape, the horizontal part thereof, being provided on one side with a laterally projecting lug s, perforated to receive connective It, or the pintle of the pivot hook o, and also on the opposite side thereof, with two small dowel pin like projections ff. The vertical portion f of said hinge may extend up, or down, and is turned in any oblique direction and bolted to the vertical bar 01, of the frame C, as shown. It will be seen that by the form and construction of this hinge, its base plate resting upon the frame with the proj ections f entering said frame and its long arm f standing obliquel and bolted to the vertical bar d, a very strong bracing effect in all directions is obtained, and without weakening the parts by mortise or tenon. Also that by the different arrangement of the upper and lower hinges all danger of the gates being thrown off is avoided, and all parts of the hinge are used, thereby lessening the cost and simplifying the application of the hinges to the gate. The rollers E E, have a flange or projection of their-cm cumference, and a slight swell, or hub on the same facial side thereof, said rollers are mounted on short journals, or spindles attached to, and projecting from the frame 0, and arranged in the same horizontal plane. The gate-panel A, is supported and slides freely on these rollers, being held thereon by the flange, or projection of their circumference lapping on, and bearing against the edges of two adjacent bars. Said rollers are held on said journals by the vertical bars 0' 0, bearing against them at the swell, or hub thereon, whereby friction is reduced. The vertical bars 0', have a square mortise to fit the tenon ends of the aforesaid journals, and are held thereon by pins 6 6. By removing pins e, the aforesaid bars a, and rollers E, may be readily detached, and the gate panel A, adjusted higher on frame 0. By this change of position, readily made, the gate is adapted to swing freely over deep snow and to permit passage of small stock beneath it. The guard g, is secured to the vertical bar d, of frame 0, and holds the bottom of panel A, firmly against frame 0, in either position without,
however, hindering its easy movement in either direction. By the use of the hand hold 2' instead of a laterally projecting pin, all danger of catching while passing is entirely avoided. The gate may be held to post B, when closed by any suitable device, as for instance a hook m, entering an eye 12., as shown.
It will be obvious that the parts of the described improvement aresimple, cheap, and durable. The gate is adapted'to be used and operated as follows: For the passing of persons singly the panel is subject to be moved sidewise on the rollers, and in front of hinge post D, to half the length of the panel. If necessary to have the full opening, the gate being opened to half its length by the roller movement as shown, may be swung fully open on the hinges with no considerable strain to the post, to a position by the side of the passage-way; or, if in this position extending across the post, it be an obstruction in any case, the gate may be swung farther around the post and extended by said roller movement along the inner side of said post and fence, and will be entirely out of the way.
Having escribed my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Paten't 1. A hinge adapted to a sliding and swinging gate composed of a cross shaped base plate I) having a front central bearing or swell, an oblique arm 1) extending rearward from the base plate, a perforated lug S, attached to said bearing, opposite proj ectionsf, ahinge bolt 7c, and a loop bolt 00, substantially as shown and described.

In a sliding and swinging gate the combination with the hinge composed of a base plate 5, an oblique arm I), a perforated lugs, projections f, and the members it and m, of the triangular gate frame 0. d. the rollers E. having a slight swell or hub and a flange upon one side, the vertical bar a", the sliding panel A. with the hand hold 71, the post B, having the rests h, and the post D, substantially as shown and described.
