Description

(No Model.)
A. M. MUNDELL. VEGETABLE PARER.
No. 519,890. Patented May 15, 1894.
Wih zsscs as indicated at 5 and soldered thereto.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDISON M. MUNDELL, OF PAOLA, KANSAS.
VEGETABLE-PARER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,890, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed November 15, 1893. Serial No. 191,016- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON M. MUNDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paola, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented a new and usefulVegetable-Parer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vegetable parers; the objects in view being to providea simple, economically constructed device that may be readily handled and which will uniformly pare fruits or vegetables With very little Waste; and, furthermore, which will be adapted for removing the eyes of potatoes, specks, or other decayed matter from either fruits or vegetables.
With these general objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a reverse perspective.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the practice of my invention I employ a Wire handle, and form the same from a blank of suitable length. This blank I coil at its center, forming a convenient eye 1, and extend the terminals parallel to each other for a portion of their length forming the handle 2. Near their free ends the terminals are slightly spread forming the shoulders 3, and they are connected at this point by an intermediate transverse plate 4 of sheet-metal, the edges of which are turned about the-terminals yond the plate the Wire terminals are bent at an obtuse angle and are connected to the opposite turned edges 6 of a knife 7. This knife 7 has a rear cutting edge which is beveled and located a short distance from the connectingplate so as to produce an intermediate slot through which the-paring may pass. The rear end of the knife is pointed at one side, as indicated at S, forming an elficient device for removing specks in fruit or vegetables or the eyes in potatoes.
In use, the vegetable or fruit is held in the left hand, while the paring device is held in the right hand, and the cutting edge of the knife is drawn over the surfaceof the same, the paring passing between the cutting edge and the edge of the connecting plate, and therefore being always of a uniform gage or thickness, whereby I avoid material waste. By inclining the handle the thickness of the paring may be increased or diminished, as will be obvious. I
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The herein described fruit and vegetable parer, the same consisting of the wire blank bent at its center and having its terminals near their ends bent at an obtuse angle, an intermediate plate connecting the terminals and bent about the same, and a knife bent about the angularly disposed portions of the terminals and having a rear cutting edge located adjacent to but spaced from the plate and having its rear end diagonallydisposed to form a point, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADDISON M. MUNDELL.
