JEWELERS ANVIL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,802, dated June 26, 1894.

Application filed April 13, 1893- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OTTMAR H. LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use:

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in jewelers anvils, and consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts as fully hereinafter set forth, the essential features of which being pointed out particularly in the claim.

In the ordinary construction of anvils of this class, they are provided with a rigid rectangular base, adapted to be clamped between the jaws of a bench-vise, which only enables the anvil to be secured in thevise with its projecting ends at right angles to the face of the jaws, or parallel therewith, and which requires said base to be entirely removed from said jaws, when it is desired to reverse the ends of the anvil.

To overcome these objections and provide an anvil that will greatly facilitate the work of the operator, isithe object of this invention, which object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved anvil clamped between the jaws of a bench-vise." diametrically as shown at a, the opening communicating with the central aperture and the adjacent walls of said opening standing some distance apart. The sides e of said base are flat and parallel, and afford a bearing for the jaws E of the vise, which are adapted to grasp saidbase, between the lower rectangular flange 1 thereby said base may be securely retained in' place by said jaws. The stem 0 of the anvil passes through the base,'and its lower end is tapped, as shown atf in Fig. 3, to receive the screw h, by which means the anvil is swiveled to said base, but may be readily detached therefrom. With this construction it will be seen that, when the base D is resting freely between the jaws of the vise, the anvil is free to turn in either direction or into any position desired, and that when said jaws are tightened upon said slotted base, it will be compressed and firmly clamp the stem 0, of the anvil, thus securing the anvil in any position to which it may be adjusted. If the operator, is working upon one end of the anvil, and he desires to use the other, all that is necessary is to loosen the jaws and reverse the ends of the anvil, and again tighten the jaws, which is accomplished without removing the base from the jaws of the vise. This construction also enables the anvil to be set at any angle desired, whereby the work may be greatly facilitated.

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with the vise, of the anvil provided with anannular body portion, the central stem depending from said body portion and having a tapped end, the compressible base having a central aperture that receives the stem of the anvil and a vertical slot opening into said aperture only, said base also having the upper and lower extending flanges embracing the opposite sides of said jaws, and the screw in the end of said stem extending onto said base.
