UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD CAVANAUGH, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,8 50, dated July 31, 1894.
Application filed April 6, 1892. Serial No. 228,015. (No model.)
combination tools and the object of my in:
vention is to provide a combination tool of simple and novel construction capable of use as an ordinary stove lifter, tack puller, pot lifter, hammer, &c.
My invention consists in the article of man-- nfacture hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation View of a portion of the same.
Like parts are represented by similarletters of reference in both views.
My improved combination tool consists essentially of a poker a, of any suitable and convenient length, size and. shape which is formed with a handle a, integral therewith. Partly surrounding the handle 01.,is' a handle guard (1 joined to the main body of the poker and handle by the connecting standards a a Extending rearwardly from the guard a and beyond the standard a is a curved projecting lip or arm a constructed of a suitable size and shape tooperate as a stove lifter adapted for use with ordinary stove lids. This projection is preferably provided with a -shaped slot a, forming a bifurcated end of a suitable size and shape to be useful in pulling tacks or for similar purposes.
Extending rearwardlybeyond the standard a in line with the handle or poker proper, is a projecting portion a having a laterally extending spur a projecting therefrom substantially parallel to the standard a forming with said standard and the body a, avnotch or bearing seat a, conveniently arranged for receiving and holding a pot-bail or similar article. The projection of, is provided at its outer extremity with a right angled projection a which extends preferably in the same plane with the spur a and standard a, but in the opposite direction from the axial line of the handle. This projection is provided with an enlarged heada, which forms aconvenient hammer head of which the poker a, or handle (1, serves as the handle; the projecting head extending on its inner side substantially parallel to the portion a also forms at one side in'connection with the projections a and a a convenient notch or bearing seat a forming a convenient hook for engaging and raising ash-pans, pots and similar articles which become heated and require a lifter therefor. The arrangement of the curved projecting lip a in connectionwith the projecting spur a also furnishes the means for engaging the edges of pans or similar receptacles, the edge of the pan being adapted to enter the notch or recess of, with the outer extremity of the curved lip of, resting under the bottom of said pan and against the side thereof, thus firmly bracing and holding the same in position, so that it may be conveniently handled.
It will thus be seen that an extremely useful combination tool is produced, the several parts of which cooperate to form various devices. For example, the part a to be used as a lid lifter, when used with the spur a forms a construction for lifting dishes, and the spur a and standard a form with the extensions a ahook for raising pails or pots. The hammer head a projecting as it does, forms with the parts a and a a catch to be hooked over ash pansand similar receptacles, the handle for such purpose being the poker a or handle portion a, while the same handle with the ham nier head o upon one side and the bifurcated lid lifter upon the other, produce a tack hammer and claw. And to this is added a poker to with its handle a, said poker forming really the base upon which the other parts are constructed.
These tools I make of malleable iron as it is the most suitable and desirable material from which to construct them. It is obvious, however, that the material used has nothing to do with the invention and I reserve the right to manufacture them of any suitable material that may be adapted to the purpose.
It is obvious that the shape and size of the device herein described may be modified to suit the requirements in use. The poker proper may be, at its outer extremity, of any suitable shape or size and may be of any desired length. I do not, therefore, limit myself to these exact constructions, but
I claim A combination tool comprising a poker, a handle thereon, standards projecting from,
said handle, a connection between said standards forming a handle guard, a bifurcated curved extension a fupon one of said standards on the side opposite said'handle guard, a prolongation a from said handle above said curved extension at, alug upon said prolongation extending toward said curved extension,
EDWARD OAVANAUGI-l.
