CLOTHES-HANGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,483, dated March 26, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN H. J. BONNER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in clothes hangers; and the object of my invention is to produce an extremely simple and cheap device, which is adapted to hold an entire suit of mens clothes and may be also made to support other garments, also to produce a device which is constructed in such a way that the clothes may be easily applied to or removed from it, and to arrange the hanger so that the clothes which it supports will be held in such a way as to prevent them from becoming creased or out of shape.

To these ends my invention consists of cer tain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger embodying my invention. Fig. 2is a perspective view of the clothes hanger with the fastening nut arranged at the top instead of at the bottom. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of another modification of the clothes hanger. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the form of hanger shown in Fig. 1, but with sleeve supports attached; and Fig. 5 is a cross section of the form of hanger shownin Fig. 1.

The hanger is provided with oppositely arranged clamping jaws 10 and 11 which are placed one above the other,the jaw 10 being oval in longitudinal section and also in'cross section, so that a coat or other garment, may lie smoothly on it, and the upper edges of the lower jaw 11 are beveled, as shown 'at 12, to prevent the jaw from creasing the trousers or other garment which may be held between it and the upper jaw. The hanger is provided with a hook 13, which has a screw shank 14 long enough to extend through the central portion of both jaws 10 and 11, and on the shank of the hook is a burr 15, or similar abutment, which rests on the top of the upper jaw I 10 and on the lower end of the screw shank is a thumb nut 16 which is adapted to abut with the lower jaw 11 and, by turning up this nut, the jaws may be clamped firmly together.

In hanging trousers the trousers are placed bottom side up and the lower ends clamped between the upper and lower jaws 11 and a waistcoat or other garment may-be fastened in a similar way. A coat is placed over the upper jaw 10, the ends of the jaw projecting into the upper portions of the coat sleeves, and it will be seen that an entire suit may be thus secured to the hanger and the latter may be suspended by the hook 13.

As shown in Fig. 2, .the hanger is provided with a suspending hook 13, like that already described, but the hook has a head 17 at the lower end, and a thumb nut 16 isplaced on the shank 14 of the hook above the upper jaw 10 and the jaws are clamped together by turning down the' nut; I

In Fig. 3 the lower jaw 11 is provided with a fixed nut 18 through which the shank 14 of the hook 13 extends, and the two'jaws may be clamped together or separated by turning the hook and its shank;

In Fig. 4 I have shown the hanger provided with sleeve supports, which may be attached to either form of the hanger, and each support consists of a transversely placed wire loop 19, the ends 20 of which are sprung into holes in the sides of the upper jaw 10, as the drawings clearly show. These loops are adapted to project into the sleeves of a garment and support the shoulders, so that for this reason the sleeve supports are especially adapted for use when a ladys garment with big sleeves is to be hung on the hanger.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A clothes hanger comprising two separable jaws having oppositely arranged clamping faces, a suspending hook having a screw threaded shank extending through both jaws, a burr on the upper end of the shank adapted to bear on the upper face of the upper member and a nut screwing on the lower end of the shank, below the lower jaw substantially as set forth.
