H- OLDBNDOMHI PLOW.
,352. Patented Apr. 9, 1895,
HENRY OLDENDORPH, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,352, dated April `9, 1895.
Application tiled October 11, 1894. Serial No. 525,552. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY OLDENDORPH, of the city of Belleville, St. Olai1county,State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plows, ot' which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My present invention relates to an improvement in the form of plows shown and described in my Patent No. 528,107, dated October 23, 1894.
My present invention relates to features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed outin the claims.
Figure I is a top or plan view of the land side` and share of the plow and showing the removable point and point plate to which my present invention refers. Fig. II is abottom view of the same. Fig. III is a section taken on line III-III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a detail perspective view showing the point and point plate removed. Fig. V is a perspective view of the removable point. Fig. VI is a perspective view of the plate point. Fig. VII is an enlarged detail section taken on line VII-VIL Fig. II.
Referring to the drawings, l represents the land side of the plow, and 2 the share having a removable point 3.
In this application as in my patent referred to, the share is provided with a self sharpening plate 4 held in position by a clamp plate 5, and in this application I have shown the arm 6 of the clamp plate secured to the bar 7, that connects the land side to the share, by means of a simple bolt S fastened through the slot 9 in the arm 6. 1
In carrying out my present invention I form a socket or pocket 10 in the front end of the share, and which has a floor or bottom 11 eX- tending well forward beneath the removable point 3. This socket is made somewhat tapering, being smallest at its inner part, and into the pocket lits the point 3, the point being tapering to correspond to the taper of the pocket, so that when the point is inserted and the plow is in use, the tendency is to tighten rather than to loosen the point in the socket.
Beneath the point is a plate 12 havingfan 11p-turned inner end 13 ythat is adapted to fit in serrations or notches 14 in the under side of the point 3. This plate Vis fitted to the point as shown in Fig. IV, and then the two' are inserted together in the socket or pocket 10, the plate resting between the point 3 and the fioor 11 of the share, and is held from moving inwardly in the operation of the plow by its end 13 being engaged with one of the notches 14. The outer end of the plate extends slightly beyond theend of the point 3 and forms the cutting edge of the point, and as it becomes worn away the plate and point are removed and the latter set forward a distance of one or more notches 14 and then the parts are inserted again in the socket 10 and the plow is ready for use without having to be taken to the shop and sharpened.
The inner end of. the point 3 is provided with a perforation 15 into which may be inserted a key or lever for drawing the point firmly into the pocket when it is applied, and such key or lever may be inserted in the slot 9 of the arm 6 for the purpose of tightening the clamp plate 5.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a plow, the combination of a share provided with a tapering socket, a tapering point adapted to fit in said socket, and an adjustable plate litting in said socket beneath thepoint and e'xtending beyond the forward end of the point, substantially as set forth.
2. In a plow, the combination of a share provided with a socket, a point adapted to lit in said socket and having a notched lower surface, and a plate adapted to tit in the socket beneath the point and having an. npturned inner edge for engaging said notches, substantially as set forth.
3. In a plow, the combination of a share having a socket from which extends a floor 11, a point having a perforation 15 and adapted to fit in said socket, and a plate adapted to lit in the socket between the point and floor ll, substantially as set forth.
HENRY OLDENDORPI-I.
In presence of HENRY J. FINK, GEO. H; KNIGHT.
