UNITED STATES PATENT OFFi cn.
LEWIS ELDRIDGE, OF MARILLA, NEW YORK.
N EC K-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,530, dated December 8, 1896.
Application filed September 29, 1896. Serial No. 607,349. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS ELDRID GE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marilla, in the county of Erie and-State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved means for preventing the pole of a wagon from rising up or swinging from side to side and striking or injuring the horses, and it will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the device, showing that portion of the harness that connects with the hame. Fig. 2 represents a top View, the straps shown in Fig. 1 being omitted.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective means for preventing the swaying of the pole from side to side or up or down and thereby prevent it from coming in contact with the horse.
Referring to the drawings for the details of construction, 1 represents the neck-yoke. It is constructed preferably of wood, the usual material. At each end is a ring 1, secured loosely in an eyepiece 2, forming part of the ferrule 3, which is rigidly fastened to the end of the neck-yoke 1.
To the center of the neck-yoke is rigidly secured by iron bands at and bolts 4 an iron bar 5, which extends upward and outward each way and terminates in eyepieces 6 and 6, through which a portion of the breaststraps 7 and 7 pass, and are provided with snap-hooks 8 for convenient attachment to the hame. The other opposite ends 9 and 9 of the breast-straps are also provided with snap- hooks 9 and 9.
On the center band 4 is an extension 10, having a hole through it in which is secured loosely an iron ring 11, through which the end of the wagon-pole 12 passes and is secured, substantially as shown in Fig. 1.
From the above description, and by reference to the drawings, it will be noticed that the pole 12 is supported in a slightly-yielding position, so that it can have but little movement in any direction, while the device is secured to the horses by means of the straps 7 and 7 a and 9 and 9*, as above described.
I claim as my invention 1. A neck-yoke, provided with rings at each end, and one ring depending from the center to support the wagon-pole, in combination with a curved bar rigidly secured at the center to the neck-yoke and extending upward and longitudinally each way from the center and terminating in eyes adapted to receive the fastening-straps, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a neck-yoke of a curved bar, rigidly secured at the center and curving upward and outward from the center each way and provided with means at each end for securing the fastening-straps, for the purposes described.
LEWIS ELDRID GE.
