' SAFETY BELT.
No. 579,818. Patented Marl30,1897..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'ELLA I. COOLEY, or COLDWATER, MICHIGAN;
SAFETY-BELT.
srncmIeAnoN forming part of Letters l atent No. 579,818, dated March so, 1897.
Application filed August28, 1896. Serial No. 604F245. (No model.)
To a, whom/it may concern: Be it known that I, ELLAI. OooLEY, of Cold water, in the*county of Branch and State of Michigan, have inventeda new and Improved Safety-Belt, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a belt especially adapted for use with infants or young children, being adapted particularly for securing the child in a high chair or other seat, or in a carriage or similar vehicle, the
belt being so constructed that while the child Reference is to be had to the-accompanyin g drawings, forming apart of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved belt, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the belt applied. J.
In carrying out the inve1ntion the belt proper, 10, is in the nature of a strap and is of the necessary length and width to be reaclily passed around the waist of the child, for example. This belt is provided at one end with a buckle 11,.the opposite end being adapted for attachment to the buckle. In connection with this Waist-belt 10 a retaining or fastening strip 12 is employed, which is provided with a buckle 13, and the retaining-strap 12 is connected with the waist-belt 10 through the medium. of a strip 14 of rubber webbing or other elastic material, the belt and retaining-strap being connected at or near their central portions.
chair.
The webbing 14 or elastic connection is preferably in loop form-and is secured in any approved manner to the belt and to the said'retaining-strap, as shown particularlyv in Fig. 1. A second strap 15 is also used, which is preferably secured to the waist-belt 10, where it connects with the elastic webbing, and the strap 15 is likewise provided with a buckle 16. When the child is placed in a high chair,
' as shown in Fig. 2, the waist-belt 10 is buckled around the waist ofthe'child, the connection being made a little to the rear about half-way,
between a pointdirectly under the arm and the center of the back, and the retaining-strap 12 is buckled around the back of the chair. The child will thus be prevented from lea'vin g. the seat of the chair, while the elastic connection between the belt and the retaining strap will permit the child to move to the 'right or to the left, or a slight distance forward and rearward, the movements being sufficient for the comfort of the child. The child will also be prevented from unfastening the belt itself.
When the child is to be held in a steady position or upright in the chair, a strap 15 is buckled around a rung in the back of the When the child is to be secured in a carriage, the retaining strap 12 is passed around the back of the carriage body or around any other convenient support.
Having thus described my invention, '1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Ba'tent- A waist-belt, a retaining-strap, an elastic material secured to the waist-belt and the re- 7 taining-strap, and a second strap connecting the waist-belt and retaining-strap by which the movem ent of the said elastic material'may be restricted, as and for the purpose set forth.
EL'LA I. COOLEY.
