SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,933, dated June 22, 1897. Application filed March 26, 1897. Serial No. 629,306. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. FRIEDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iron River, in the county of Iron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of cutter-Sharpeners which present two cutting- Heretofore these surfaces have been constructed with the cutting edges meeting or arranged in the same plane, and as the knife-blade is drawn across the same it passes down into the vertex of the acute angle, often causing a wire-edge to be formed on the knife.
The object of my invention is to provide a sharpener of this class having beveled cutting edges arranged in different planes, and thus separate the cutting edges at the point of intersection of said surfaces, thus allowing the knife-edge to be drawn across the cutting edges without meeting the vertex of the angle of said surfaces.
It is also my object to provide a combined cutter-sharpener and steel, and provide the same with a surface for burnishing or polishing knives.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a modification, and Fig. 5 an end view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A denotes a steel provided with a handle B. i
C denotes the ferrule, connecting the steel to its handle.
D denotes a plate rigidly secured to the ferrule and projecting outwardly therefrom in a plane at a slight angle to the plane ofthe steel and separated therefrom about onefourth of an inch or more at the handle end of the steel.
E and F denote two square hardenedsteel plates having beveled cutting edges on all sides. Said plates are adj ustably secured to the plate D by means of screws g, and so arranged that the beveled edges overlap, the plate F being the uppermost.
H denotes a washer interposed between the plates F and D to raise the former above the plate E.
Theplate D is formed integral with the ferrule, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and its under side is provided with a surface similar to that of the steel, but any suitable burnishing-surface may be used for said plate, sufficient space being left between it and the steel to accommodate the knife. The blade of the knife is inserted at right angles to the steel with its back adjacent to the ferrule. The steel and burnisher are then grasped by the handle and drawn back and forth lengthwise of the knife-blade, thus burnishing the same. The V-shaped recess in the plate D is to accommodate the passage of the knifeblade between the cutting-plates E and F.
The steel plates or cutters are adapted for adjustment relatively to each other at different angles to accommodate the size or kind of knife to be sharpened or to give the required edge to the blade, and as the four sides of each plate have cutting edges each pair can be used in turn should one become dull.
The modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is an adaptation of my cutter-sharpener for independent attachment to a steel, and con sists of a sleeve J, adapted to fit over a steel and provided with a thumb-screw K for securing it in position thereon adjacent to the handle. The cutter-sharpeners are secured to a flange L, forming part of said sleeve, and are arranged one above the other, as be* fore described.
