SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,167, dated August 31, 1897. Application filed May 25, 1896. Serial No, 592,910. (No model.)
To all-whom it wmy C07LC67'IL.
Be it known that I, JOHN F. DOOLITTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Be'nding-Machinespf which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I, have contemplated to applying that principle so as to'distinguish it from other inventions.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
The object of my invention is to devise in a bending-machine a roll which can be used in bending stock of varying thickness, eliminating thereby the necessity and inconvenience of changing rolls for each different thickness of stock; and a further object is to provide the machine with an adjustable guide 2 5 which will perform its function with less frictional resistance than do the guides at present used in such machines.
To accomplish the first-named obj ect,I construct my roll of two roll-sections, which are 0 keyed and slide upon the same shaft, aspace being left between the two sections, forming an annular slot, the width of the said slot being regulated by means of screw-bolts passin g and threaded through the one section and en 3 5 gaging the face of the other section.
In order to reduce the frictional resistance occasioned by the contact of the stock with the guide, I provide the guide with a rotating face, the force of the contact being received 40 by ball-bearings, as hereinafter described.

The rolls A, B, and B are driven in the direction indicated by the arrows by the wellknown means of the pulleys and gears shown in Fig. I, the upper roll A having vertical adj ustment by means of pulleys E and E,worms C,whee1s D,and screws F in the usual manner.
The guide-rod g of the guide G extends through the housings H and II, sliding easily through housing II and having its adjusting mechanism at the housing II, as hereinafter described.
The shaft J is turned down at its end, form-' ing thereby the shoulder j, against which the roll-section a of the roll is backed and keyed to the shaft by means of feather j. The rollsection a, having the three screw-bolts M passing therethrough and parallel to the shaft J and having screw threaded engagement therewith, is also mounted and keyed to the said shaft in the same manner.
The end of the shaft is turned down and threaded to receive the loose washer K and the nut L.
The variation in the width of the groove can be effected by turning the screw-bolts M after loosening up the nut L.
The guide G is composed of the guide-rod g, extending, as before stated, through both housings H and H, and is enlarged to a suitable diameter at the guide end, as shown in Fig. VII. The inner or primary face 9 is constructed of a hardened-steel disk and is 5 formed with a ball-race 9 around and near the edge of its face. The'outer or secondary face 9 is also constructed of a hardened-steel disk and has a similar ball-race 9 formed as in the primary face 9 and is further pivoted I00 to the guide-rod g by means of the screw g about which the disk g freely rotates. A jam-block g isjainmed down it pen the threads of the screw by means of the set-screw g to prevent it from backing out. Balls are placed in the races and form the bearing for thrusts on the disk in the direction of its axis.
The opposite end of the guide-rod has threaded engagement with the thimble 71, which has rotating bearing in the housing II and, being formed with the flange 7L4, limits the lateral movement of the guide-rod toward the housing II. A washer h is keyed upon the opposite side of the housing II and is provided with holes 7L2 in its periphery for receiving a bar, by means of which the thimble is turned, thus laterally adjusting the guide-rod and its attached guide. Two such guides are provided in the machine, as shown in Fig. IV, so that the machine may be reversed and the stock sent in the other direction. I
Rolls may be similarly constructed having more than two sections, so that such stock as channel-bars and I-beams may be bent, the number of sections and position of the slots depending upon the form of the stock.
\Vhen fiatiron is bent, a washer N of the required thickness is inserted between the sections of the roll and a washer N inserted between the shoulder] and the inner section a, Fig. V.
In bending bars of irregular or unsymmetrical cross-section, such bars, by virtue of the inequality of the internal strains produced in the bending operation, have a tendency to warp on issuing from the rolls, and would so warp were not the guide G provided for such a contingency.
The direction in which the bars will warp may be usually determined by the form of the cross-section, but if such cross-section does not give the necessary data for such determination the direction of warp may be determined empirically. In either case, when said direction is known the bars are so fed into the rolls that the warping tendency will always be toward the guide, which receives the consequent thrust and performs the operation of equilibrating the internal in equalities, so that the ring remains flat on completion.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be used for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclosed, provided the principles of construction setforth respectively in the following claims are employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a bending-machine, a roll consisting of the combination with two elemental rollsections, of a shaft adapted to mount said roll at its end, and provided with means adapted to limit one of said sections in its motion in the direction of the axis of said shaft, the other section provided with means adapted to vary the distance between said two sections, said shaft provided with means for limiting the action of said varying means, whereby said two sections are fixed relatively to each other, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bending-machine, a roll consisting of the combination with two elemental rollsections, of a shaft adapted to mount said roll at its end and provided with means adapted to limit one of said sections in its motion in the direction of theaxis of said shaft, the other section provided with screwbolts passing longitudinally therethrough, having screw-threaded engagement therewith and adapted to vary the distance between said two sections, said shaft provided with means for limiting the action of said bolts, whereby the said two sections are fixed relatively to each other, substantially as set forth.
3. In a bending-machine, a roll consisting of the combination with two elemental rollsections, of a shaft adapted to mount said roll at its end, said shaft provided with a shoulder adapted to limit one of said sections in its motion in the direction of the axis of the shaft, the other section provided with means adapted to vary the distance between said two sections, said shaft provided with means for limiting the action of said varying means, whereby said two sections are fixed relatively to each other, substantially as set forth.
4. A roll consisting of the combination with two elemental roll-sections, of a shaft formed with a shoulder and provided at its end with a nut and washer, said roll-sections being located between said shoulder and washer, and provided with means adapted to separate said sections, whereby they are caused to bear respectively against said shoulder and washer, whereby they are relatively fixed, substantially as set forth.
5. A roll consisting of the combination of roll-section a, roll-section a, shaft J provided with a shoulderj and formed with a threaded portion at its end, washer K, nut I and means for separating said sections, whereby they are caused to bear respectively against said shoulder and washer and whereby they are relatively fixed, substantially as set forth.
6. A roll consisting, of the combination of roll-sections a and a, shaft J provided with a shoulderj and a threaded end, a washer K, nut I, and screw-bolts M, substantially as set forth.
7. A roll consisting of the combination of roll-sections a and ct, shaft .1 provided with a shoulderj and a threaded end, a washer K, a nut I, screw-bolts M and a washer N, substantially as set forth.
8.
