Description

tNoModel J. A. HADLEY.
FLUE STOP.
No. 594,871 Patented Dec. 7, 1897.
6 Her 144 s,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA A. HADLEY, OF BRAZIL, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J OHNATHAN M. FAST, OF SAME PLACE.
FLU E-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,871, dated December 7, 1897.
Application fil d March 10,1897. Serial No. 626,810. (No model.)
being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to flue-stops for clos-.
ing the Stovepipe-openings in chimneys; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which can be adjusted to fit different sizes of sleeves in said openings and also to fit sleeves which may through accident have gotten out of shape.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter'fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a flue-stop con structed according to my invention, showing the same applied to the sleeve of a flue-opening. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the stop detached, looking from the upper side. Fig. 3 is an end view looking from the inside. Fig. at is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the said drawings the numeral 1 designates a sleeve or thimble inserted in the pipeopening of a chimney or flue.
The numeral 2 designates the flue-stop,comprising a disk 3, and pivot-ally connected with said disk is a rotatable cylinder 5, cut away at the inner end, forming a scoop to receive soot. This cylinder is 'made of a single piece of metal bent into shape with the ends overlapping each other and confined in place by a clamp or clasp 6. The numeral 7 designates the pivot in the center of said disks, to which is secured a piece of spring-wire 8, extending outwardly therefrom, forming arms 9, the ends of which are bent over the rim of the cylinder, so as to hold the latter to the disk 3.
Connected with the said cylinder is a springarm 10, consisting of a flat strip of metal having its inner end bent back, upon itself and engaging with the rim of the cylinder and at the opposite end is bent at a right angle and inserted between the edge of the cylinder, and is also formed with a bulge 12.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The stop is inserted in the sleeve 01' thimble 1 and will be held securely in place by means of, the spring-arm,which will engage with the sleeve by spring-pressure.
It will be noted that the overlapping ends of the cylinder are not secured to each other, but pass between the clamp or clasp 6, so that they may be contracted or expanded, so as to adjust the cylinder to different sizes of sleeves.
The spring-arms 9 tend to press the said ends of the cylinder outward, so that they will fit snugly in the sleeve.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. In a flue-stop, the combination with the connected disk, and the pivot-pin, of the cylinder having overlapping ends, the clasp embracing the same, and the spring-arms con nected with said pivot and with the rim of the cylinder, substantially as described.
2. In a flue-stop, the combination with the connected disk, and the pivot-pin, of the cylinder having overlapping ends, the clasp embracing the same, the spring-arms connected with said pivot and with the rim of the cylinder, and the spring-arm having one end engaging with the rim of the cylinder and the other end bent at a right angle and inserted between the other end of the cylinder and the disk, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, JOSHUA A. HADLEY.
