llNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI E. TVIST, OF ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA.
COMBINED SCOOP AND HAND-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,129, dated August 16, 1898. Application led February 23, 1898. Serial No. 671,247. (No model.)-
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LEVI E. TWIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albert Lea, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Scoop and Hand-Truck; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved device for handling coal, wheat, &c., and is in the nature of a combined scoop and hand-truck.
To the end above noted my invention consists of the novel devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein, like numerals indicating like parts throughout the several views- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved combined scoop and hand-truck, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view-ofV thesame.
l indicates the body of the scoop, which has approximately the form of the body of an ordinary scoop-shovel, but is of course much larger. To the rear end of thescoop 1 a bail-like handle 2 is rigidly secured by means of bolts, rivets, or otherwise.
3 indicates an axle which is rigidly secured to the bottom of the scoop l close to the rear end of the same. A pair of small wheels 4 are loosely and independently mounted on the ends ofv the axle 3.
The wheels 4C, being loose or independently mounted, permit the scoop when used as a truck to readily turn short corners. The
`wheels and axle, being located at the rear end of the scoop, rserve as a fulcrum and permit the front edge of the scoop to be elevated a considerable distance above the fioor on which the truck is run.
This device has been especially designed for unloading coal from cars; but it is of course capable of a much more extended use. It will in fact be found a most efficient device for transferring coal from one point to another not a great Ways apart-as, for example, from different parts of a coal yard or house.
When the forward edge of the scoop is thrown down onto the floor,l the scoop may be forced into the body of coal and lled, and after this has been done by pressing down on the handleV 2 the scoop may be raised, so as to hold its load, and the device may now be used as a hand-truck to convey the coal to some distant point.
By actual usage I have found this device to be extremely efficient for the purposes had in view and to be a great labor-saver.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
The combination with the scoop l provided with the bail-like handle 2, of the axle 3, secured to the bottom and rear portion of said scoop, and provided with the truck-wheels 4, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEVI E. TWIST.
Witnesses:
EDWIN S. CHURCH, AUGUSTUS ARMSTRONG.
