TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
rBe it known that I, WILLIAM HAYES, of' Fall'River, in the county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Mode of Preventing Belts from Lapping around Shafts-when thrown froni lulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,V and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in a cylinder with heads similaito a spool, and is affixed on the shaft like a loose pulley.
Figure 1 is :1- perspective view of a shaft and pulley with my invention applied to it.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my invention, removed from fig. 1, and divided, to illustrate the manner of applying it after the shafts are hung.
Figure 3 is a sectional view ot'a ring, removed from iig. l and divided, to show the manner of applying it to the shaft. l
Fig. 1, Al Al is the shaft B1 the pulley; Gl my invention; D1 I)1 heads cast with 1; El a ring secured te the shaft hy set-screw h, whieli prevents Cl from oscillating; c1 el screws which hold E1 together. Fig. 2, C2 C2 the cylinder, shown by C* in iig. 1; D`l D2 the l1ea.ds;f2f2, 85e., screws which secure the cylinder togethciu Fig. 3, E3 ring shown by El in fig. 1.
The cylinder C and ring El are cast as herein shown, with heads halved together and secured with screws, as shown by fifi and g3 lrf, in figs. 2 and 3, that they may be easily and quickly applied to the shaft Without removing it from its hangings.
rThe within device being constructed as herein described, and aliixed to the shaft as herein shown, its oper- 'ation may be noted. When the bolt slides' off or is thrown off from the pulley, it falls onto Cl, (sec lig. 1.) Cl being loose on the shaft, stops revolving, the belt hangs loose on it, and is thus prevented from lapping.
In this invention I do not confine to the forms set forth for securing the cylinder or ring together-they may be united in any-practical manner; nor to the form /ot' cylinder set fortlr-it may be constructed with but one head, the pulley being a substitute for thc other; nor to dividing it, as shownit may be cast whole, and affixed to thc shaftwhen the pulley is attached; but what I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The device herein described for preventing belts from lapping around shafts, constructed, applied, and operating as herein set fortln WILLIAM HAYES. Witnesses:
Louis LArnAM, D. STILLWELL.
