HARROW-TOOTH FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,465, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed May 16, 1899. Serial No. 717,072. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES J. CALLENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Harrow- Teeth to Tooth-Bars, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an improved device for attaching harrow-teeth to tooth-bars, and has for its object to provide a simple, strong, and inexpensive clip or block by means of which either a curved or straight harrowtooth may be expeditiously and efliciently attached to the concave side of a concavoconvex metallic tooth-bar; and the invention is in the nature of an improvement on the harrow for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me on the 9th day of April, 1895, and numbered 537,272. As shown and described in saidLetters Patent, the harrow consists of concavo-convex metallic tooth-bars journaled at their ends in draft-bars and having their convex sides disposed toward the ground and a plurality of barrow-teeth bolted directly to the upper concave side of each of the tooth-bars. By my present invention I provide an improved and efficient clip or block by means of which either straight or curved harrow-teeih may be expeditiously and firmly attached to the concaved sides of the tooth-bars and by means of which the teeth are held in position on the tooth-bars against all liability of twisting or displacement.
To these .ends my invention consists in the features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a concavo-convex tooth-bar, draftbar, and a harrow-tooth secured in place on the tooth-bar by means of my improved clip or block. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of my improved clip or block bolted to the toothbar, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clip or block detached.

metallic tooth-bars journaled in the draft-' bar 2.. It will be understood, of course, that the tooth-bar will in practice be journaled at each of its ends in a draft-bar 2. As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the tooth-bar is concavo-convex in cross-section, the convex side being disposed toward the ground,so that it will operate to level the same and crush the clods, and when the tooth-bar is turned in its bearings to raise the teeth out of the ground the convex under side of the tooth-bar will act as a runner to facilitate transporting the harrow' to and from the field, all of which is clearly shown and described in my said Letters Patent before referred to.
To the concave upper side 3 of the toothbar 1 are attached in any suitable manner a number of metallic clips or blocks, one only As shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, each of said clips or blocks comprises a casting having a base 4, preferably fiat on its upper side and convexed or curved longitudinally on its under side to correspond to the concave shape of the upper side of the tooth-bar. The base 4 is provided at its. rear or lowermost end with a lug or flange 5, that engages the rear or lowermost edge of the tooth-bar. The base 4 is provided with a bolt-hole 6, adapted to receive the head of a bolt 7 that passes through a corresponding bolt-hole formed in the tooth-bar and which is held in place bya nut 8, which operates to tightly draw the clip or-block to the face of the tooth-bar. The under side of the clip or block being convex or curved longitu= dinally and the upper side of the tooth-bar being correspondingly concave,it follows that when the clip or block is firmly fastened in place it can have no lateral or sidewise movement, and this result is materially aided by the lug or flange 5 engaging the edge of the tooth-bar. The base 4 is provided on one side with an upright lug or car 9, provided with a bolt-hole 10. The harrow-tooth 11 at its upper end lies flat against the upper side of the base 4: and inner side of the lug or ear 9 and is bolted to the latter by a bolt 12. I have shown the tooth in the present instance as being straight; but it will be manifest that it'might be curved, as shown in my said former Letters Patent, or of other desired formation. I have also shown the clip or block and the harrow-tooth secured in place by the bolts 8 and 12; but I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to such fastening devices, as others will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a tooth-bar concave on its upper side, of a tooth-holding block having a convex lower side and a flattened upper side formed with an upwardlyprojecting perforated lug,a barrow-tooth resting against the flattened upper side of the block and against said lug, a bolt passing through the tooth and the lug, and a bolt passing through the block and the tooth-bar at one side of the lug, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a draw-bar, and an oscillatory tooth-bar journaled in the d rawbar and concave on its upper side, of a toothholding block having a convex under side fitting the concave of the tooth-bar, an upwardly-projecting perforated lug on its upper side and a bolt-hole at one side of the lug, a barrow-tooth bearing against the block and against the lug thereon, and bolts securing the tooth to the lug and the block to the toothbar, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a tooth-bar having a concave upper side, of a tooth-holding block having a convex lower side fitting the concave of the tooth bar, an offset flange at one end bearng against one edge of the toothbar, and a flattened upper side formed with an upwardly-projecting perforated lug, a harrow-tooth resting against the said flattened side of the block and against said lug, and bolts passing through the block and tooth-bar and the tooth and lug, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a draw-bar, an oscillatory tooth-bar journalcd in the drawbar, a tooth-holding block formed with an upwardly-projecting lug and secured to the too h-bar at one side of said lug, a harrowtooth resting against the upper side of the block and against the lug, and a fastening device passing through the harrow-tooth and the lug, substantially as described.
