SPECIFICATION forming pare of Letters Patent No. 651,103, dated June 5, 1900.-

To all Zoll/071i, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER' J CoPPENs, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in heating-stoves; and its objects are to provide the same with improved means for circulating the air and products of combustion through the stove, whereby the combustion of` the fuel is more complete and better regulated and the heat more eifectually utilized, and to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter Inore fully described,and particularly pointed out in the claims. I accomplish these results by providing the stove with a system of lues, pipes, and dampers, whereby the air-currents can be shifted and controlled, as will more fully appear in detail by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a stove embodying my invention, taken on the line l l Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the same with parts broken away to show the construction; Fig 3, a horizontal section of the sanne on the line 3 3 of Figs. l and 2; Fig. 4, the same on the line 4 4 of the same, and Fig. 5 an enlarged detail illustrating the pot-support.

A represents the cylindrical sheet-metal body of the stove, provided with an inwardlypressedcircumferential bead A', and B is the pot-supporting ring, madein segmental sections to permitof expansion by heat and of insertion in place. Said ring is provided with a concave channel B opposite the bead Al and an inwardly and upwardlyinclined flange B'f to support the pot. The channel B is somewhat deeper than the bead A', whereby a space is left to contain cement, and bolts or rivets extend through the ring and body to secure the ring in place. The tire-pot Gis provided near the top with an outwardly and downwardly projecting Han ge C to rest upon Serial No. 720,012. (No model.)
the flange B and support the lire-pot, and clearance is allowed between the edges of the respective flanges and the stove-body at one side and the lire-pot at the other side to permit of unequal expansion by heat.
D is an annular casting above the lire-pot, whicl1,together with the body A and the liange C', forms an annular air-chamber at the top of the lire-pot, from which chamber extends inwardly a series of openings D in the top of the fire-pot to admit hot air above the fuel. Pipes E extend from said chamber to near the top of the stove and thence in opposite curves to the back partl thereof, where they enter a T-pipe F, which latter extends horizontally rearward to the semicircular chamber H, to which the chimney-pipe I'I is attached. Opening into the bottom of said T- pipe is a vertical pipe G, extending downward to near the floor.
I is a damper in the T-pipe F, between the pipe G and the chimney-pipe II, which when opened permits the air from the pipe G to pass directly to the chimney-pipe and when closed forces the air to pass down the pipesy E to the fire-pot.
At the top of the base J and engaging the lower part of the fire-pot is an inwardly-proj ectin g Iflange J,which, together with the side of the lire-pot and the body of the stove, forms a chamber around the fire-pot, opening into which chamber is a register M at` the front, and an opening N' at the rear of said chamber connects the same with a vertical pipe N', extending upward to the top of the stove and having openings through the same v for the escape of hot air. In the base J and at each side of the ash-pan K is a vertical partition L, located at a distance from the outer wall of the base and terminating `at a distance from the front of the same, and also extended and connected at the rear of the ash-pan, thus forming side flues L in the base extending from the front thereof to the pipes O O.
H is a semicircular chamber opening at its respective ends into the top of the stove and having attached the chimney-pipe H. The pipes O O extend from said chamber downward to and connect it with the nes L in the base.
P P are suitable dampers which when IOO turned toa horizontal position close the pipes O O and open the passage from the top of the stove to the chamber I-I and when turned to a vertical position close the said passage and open the passage from the pipes O O to the said chamber.
The described means of supporting the firepot is not claimed herein but is reserved as the subject-matter of a separate application, filed January 10, 1900, Serial No. 1,969, in accordance with the requirements of the Ofce.
The operation of my device is as follows: Air admitted at the register M passes around the tire-pot, being heated thereby, and thence through the passage N and up the pipe -N into the room, thus heating the pipe G and causing an upward current of air in the same drawn from near the Hoor, which air when the damper I is closed passes through the pipes E E and thence out at the openings D' into the upper part of the fire-pot. By turning the dainpers P vertical, thus cutting off the direct passage from the top of the stove to the chimney-pipe, the course of the air is thence downward through the fire-pot into the base and thence rearward by way of the fines L and upward through the pipes O O to the chimney-pipe Il. By turning the dampers P horizontal and opening the register M' an aireurrcnt passes through said'register into the base and thence upward through the fire, and, mingling with the hot-air currents from the openings D', a smoke-consu ming effeet and very vigorous and complete combustion occurs.' By opening the damper I a current of air Hows up the pipe G directly to the chimney, thus checking the chimneyedrat't and drawing otf the air in the room near the ioor. By turning the dampers P vertical `and opening the register M a current of cold air from near the floor of the room passes through the tlues L L and up the pipes O O to the chimney, thereby checking the draft and cooling the base at the same time. By turning the dampers P vertical and closing the damper I and register M the draft is wholly from near the Hoor through the pipe G, and thence downward through the pipes E, chamber D, and fire-pot C to the base, and thence upward through the pipes O O to the chimney-pipe, thus maintaining a very slow fire and effectually warming the base of the stove and extracting the heat. The combus tion is also made more complete by the pre liminary heating of the air and discharging the same over the top of the fire in finelydi vided streams from the openings D.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination ot' astove having a firepot and a base, and a passage from the top of the stoveto the chimney-pipe, a pipe connecting the base and chimney-pipe, a damper to alternately close and ope'n said passage and pipe, and a pipe extending upward from near the Hoor to near the chimney-pipe, a T-pipe connecting said latter pipe with the chimneypipe and with the interior of the stove, and a damper in said T-pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a stove, a fire-pot, abase beneath the tire-pot, a separate chamber surrounding the fire-pot and having an inlet-register, a flue extending upward from said chamber, a pipe extending upward and within said ue, a T on the upper end of said pipe, connecting the same with the interior of the stove and with the chimney-pipe, a damper in said T, a passage directly from the upper part of the stove to the chimney-pipe, a damper in the same,
4a pipe connecting the base and the chimneypipe, and a damper in the same, substantially as described.
3. In a stove, afire-pot having an air-chamber at the top witha series of openings, a separate chamber surrounding the fire-pot and having an air-inlet register, and a vertical iue, a base below the fire-pot having an airinlet at the front, a pipe extending from the base to the chimney-pipe, a damper to close the same, a passage from the top of the stove to the chimney-pipe, a damper to close the same, and a pipe extending from near the floor upward within said line, and thence downward to the air-chamber at the top of the lire-pot, substantially as described.
4. In a stove, a fire-pot having, at the top, an air-chamber and openings, a vertical pipe extending from near the oor to the upper part of the stove and thence to the air-charm ber, a T-pipe connecting said pipe with the chimney-pipe, a damper in said T-pipe, abase below the re-pothaving side fines, a pipe extending from the base to the chimney-pipe, a passage from the top of the stove to the chimney-pipe and a damper adapted to alternately open said last-named pipe and said passage, substantially as described.
5. In a stove, the combination of a fire-pot having an airchamber and openings near the top, a base beneath the repot having vertical partitions forming fines at the sides and rear thereof, a semicircular chamber at the top of the stove connected to the chimneypipe at the middle and opening into the stove at each end, pipes connecting the flues in -the base to the said chamber, a damper, adapted toalternately close said pipes and the openings from said chamber to the top of the stove, a separate air-chamber around the fire-pot having a register at the front to admit air, and a passage at the rear, a vertical pipe extending upward from said passage to the top of the stove, a pipe within said pipe connected to a T-pipe at the top, pipes extending from the T-pipe to the air-ehamber and a damper to close the T-pipe, substantially as described.
