FREDRICK F. FULKS, OF BUCKNER, TEXAS.
COMBINED SHEARS AND KNIFE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK F. Forum, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buckner, in the county of Parkerand tate of Texas, have invented ace tainnew and use ful Improvement in a Combined Shears and Knife, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to anew article of manufactu re consisting of a combined shears and knife, and is intended for the use of dressmakers, tailors, and the like, being so constructed as to give the free use of the shears when needed and the use of the knife when it is needed, thus avoiding laying down one and picking up the other.
With these endsin view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafterset forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of] my combined shears and knife; and Fig. 2, an enlarged view of the finger-guard of the shears, showing the interior of the knife by the removal of one of the sides thereof, the remainder of the shears being taken away.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the shears, the blades of which may be of ordinary construction, B being the finger-guard and having formed there with the body 0 of the knife-handle. To this body are attached the side plates D by suitable rivets E, the knife having pivoted therein the blade F and corkscrew G or any other suitable tools.
H is the back spring, held in position by the rivets, as shown, and acting in the usual manner to hold the blades in closed or open position, as the case may be. The spring is provided with a 111 g H, lying back of a rivet. he finger-guard is so rounded at I as to provide for the deflection of the back spring II when the blade or tool is being opened or closed, thus preventing anycramping of the spring, while at the same time affording the necessary support.
The sides of the knife-handle have formed therewith the clips .J, which extend downward upon each side of the finger-guard and are secured in place by the rivets K. In order that when the shears are closed the thu mb and finger guards may be held against sidewise movement while the knife is being used, a lug L, formed upon the thumb-guard M, and a corresponding recess or socket N are formed in the finger-guard, one fitting Within the other and accomplishing the desired result. From this it will be seen that the knife may be used either by firstclosing the shears and grasping both the handle of the knife and the guards of the shears, or one of the blades of the shears may be swung at right angles to the other and the knife then used, the thumb-guard and knife-handle only being grasped.
Great convenience is afforded by my improvement, since dressmakers, tailors, and the like may use the shears without reference to the knife, and yet when ripping or work requiring the use of the knife-blade is to be done it may be accomplished without laying down the shears by simply opening the blade of the knife. Furthermore, it will be noted that the blade of the knife may remain open, as it in no wiseinterferes with the operation of the shears. This will add further to the convenience when cutting and ripping are frequently alternated.
A file O is formed upon one of the blades of the shears just forward of its pivot-point and may be used for filing the finger-nails or the like, thus making my improvement especially adapted for ladies use and an advantageous combination for a work-basket.
In the manufacture of my combined shears and knife the finger-guard and body of the handle are cast in one piece, thus requiring only the placing of the sides. This will make the cost'of myimprovement apparently small.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is A pair of shears having a fingei'guai'd, a body of a knife-handle formed with the finger-guard at its inner end, said guard having its upper outer edge rounded, and its under in the recess of the finger-guard to prevent a sidewise movement of said finger and thumb guards when the knife is used.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed 15 my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDRIOK F. FlU LKS.
