l ...JKM I llNTTnn STnTns PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES JACKSON, OF MANSFIELD, OI-IIO.
BANANA-SHIPPING OASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,625, dated. August 7, 1900.
Application iiled March 3, 1900. Serial No. 7,160. (No modeL) To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES JAOKSON,a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Banana-Shipping Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in banana-cases; and thoe objects ot' my invention are, first, toprovide a case in which can be shipped bananas without packing; second, to so construct the case that when a bunch of bananas are placed within the same it will be impossible to bruise them in any way, and, third, to so construct and arrange the case that when the bananas are placed within the saine they Will be suspended upon springs either in a vertical or horizontal position. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a view showing the general construction, a portion of the mouth of the sack removed, showing a bunch of bananas packed for shipping. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of same to shown more fully the construction and arrangement of the parts constituting the packingcase.
Letters of reference indicate the several parts throughout the views.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a circular skeleton frame composed of six ver-4 tical strips B. The said strips of wood are secured to the Wire hoops C by any suitable mechanism. Thelower hoop D, I have shown as made of Wood, but metal can be used.
E indicates an inner frame composed of six vertical strips of wood G, arranged in line with the strips B and connected to them by bed-springs F, one near the top and one near the bottom of each strip. This construction forms an outer and inner frame, the inner frame suspended within the outer frame by spring connections and links I-I. The said link connections can be either a rod provided with suitable eyes to connect with screw-eyes secured in the strips B and G or a coil-spring of suitable strength to support the weight of the bunch of bananas. v
J indicates a sack of any soft material, the lower end K tapered to receive the small end of the bunch of bananas. The said sack is secured to the strips G in any suitable and efticient manner. The object of the connect ing-springs F is for the purpose of forminga spring-cushion for the inner frame when the same is placed in a horizontal position, preventing the danger of bruising bananas when in transit. s
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a banana-case, the combination of the outer skeleton case composed of the series of vertical'` strips, the hoops'surrounding and holding said strips, the inner case composed of a series of vertical strips, the links connecting the strips of the inner to the strips of the outer case, the springs connected to and imposed between the strips of the inner and outer case forming cushions, a'nd the bananaholding sack arranged in and secured to the inner case.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES JACKSON.
