FOLDING CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 662,557, dated November 27-, 1900.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE WYNN COLE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Arlesdene, Boscombe, Bournemouth, in the county of Hants, England, have invented a certain new and useful Folding Deck and Camp Chair and Bedstead, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 19,007, hearing date August 28, 1896,) of which the following is a specification.

The subject of the invention is a folding deck and camp chair of improved construction so contrived and arranged as to be capable of being folded so as to form a trestle-bed.

In order more clearly to explain the nature of the invention, I have annexed hereto drawings illustrating the same, from which it will be seen that the principal parts of the chair are the back, the seat, the long arms with transverse bar at the back, and the attachable leg-rest. The entire framework of the chair is made of pine, oak, teak, or other suitable material, and the back, seat, and leg-rest are filled in with split cane interlaced and let into the framework in the usual way or with other suitable material.

Figure 1 represents the invention arranged as a chair Without the adjustable table or leg rest. Fig. 2 represents the invention arranged as a lounge with the leg-rest and adjustable table. Fig. 3 represents the invention arranged as a bed with the leg-rest attached. Fig. 4 represents the invention arranged as a bed fitted with curtains. Fig. 5 represents the back of the chair. Fig. 6 represents the Fig. 7 represents the legrest. Fig. 8 represents the chair folded, back view. Fig. 9 represents the chair folded, front view.

A indicates the frame of the back of the chair; B, the frame of the seat; 0, the long arms with transverse bar at back; D, the chair-trestles to support the long arms; .E, the frame of the leg-rest; F, the mosquitocurtains; G, the vertical rods for the curtains; H, the horizontal rods for the curtains; I, the mattress on the bed; K, a short sliding band passing from pole to pole at the head of the bed to prevent the pillow from falling; L, the adjustable table shown in Fig. 2; P, the end of a bar which extends transversely between the long arms C; R, plates fastened on the frame of the back of the chair and provided with teeth 1', which engage the bar P; S, plates each provided with a slot 3, fixed to the under sides of each of the long arms 0; T, connecting-plates capping the endsof the trestles and each provided with a runner t, which engages one of the slots 8. This arrangement of the rackwork, transverse bar, and slotted plate enables the slope of the chair-back to be varied at will. I do not, however, confine myself to this method of adjustment. Any other equivalent device could be employed. a shows part of the back filled in with interlaced cane or other material; I), the part of the seat so filled in; c, the sockets in the long arms 0 for fixing the vertical rods G to carry the mosquito-curtains F; d, the connecting-screws for affixing the leg-rest to the chair; 6, the part of the leg-rest filled in with interlaced cane or other material; f, the bed-trestles to support the bed; g, the hinges attached to the legs, and h the hinges joining the seat to the back.

The long arms may be fiat and are joined behind the back by a transverse bar, and the employment of rackwork and a slotted plate enables the angle required for sitting or reclining to be regulated. The back and seat are joined together by hinges to admit of their being folded fiat or at any required angle. The seat and leg-rest are joined together by connecting-screws, so that the leg-rest may be removed when not required for use. The back is bolted to a pair of trestles, the upper end of one member of each of which serves to support the long arms at any required height by meansof hinges or flanges. The long arms are preferably further supported by stays attached to the seat of the chair.

The chair can be spread out so as to form a trestle-bed, as shown in Fig. 3, three additional trestlesf being attached to the under sides of the seat and back portions. These trestles are attached in any approved manner and may be hinged, so as fold against the seat and back portions when not required in use as supports.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a foldable chair, the combination, with a back A, and a seat B hinged to the lower part of the said back and provided with front legs; of arms 0 extending beyond the opposite ends of the back and seat and provided with slotted plates at their middle parts, trestles D pivoted together and supporting the said back and provided with pins twhichi slide in the said slotted plates, and stays pivoted to the front part of the said seat and to the said arms in front of the slotted plates, substantially as set forth.

2.. In a foldable chair, the combination, with a back A having toothedplates 1" secured to it, and a seat B hinged to the lower part of the said back and provided with front legs; of arms 0 extending beyond the opposite ends of the back and seat and provided with slotted plates at their middle parts, a bar P extending between the said arms and engaging with the saidtoothed plates behind the back, trestles D- pivoted together and supporting the said back and provided with pins t which slide in the said slotted plates, and

stays pivoted to the front part of the said seat and to the said arms in front of the slotted plates, substantially as set forth.
