SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,908, dated January 15, 1901. Application filed April 24, 1899. Serial No. 714,233. (No model.)

Be it known that I, MARIUS HORST, a citizen of the-Republic of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Arm-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in folding chairs of the kind especially adapted for use in public halls; and the object of my improvements is to provide chairs of this character which by the arrangement of folding backs and seats will permit persons to pass freely between the chairs in a single row and between two rows of chairs.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of one side of a chair, showing the back in a vertical or open position and with a portion removed to show the spring. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a chair complete, with the back and seat in horizontal position; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the chair with the back in a vertical position.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the supporting-legs are of common form, except at their upper ends they are provided with offsets 5, to which the seat 4: is pivoted or hinged, and with recesses 8 to accommodate the edge of the seat when the latter is raised. The back of the chair is composed of the vertical uprights 1,'the circular plates 2 and 3, and the cross-piece 6, extending between said circular plates, said cross-piece forming the back proper and is vertically adjustable, as will be described. Fixed near the upper end of the post 1 is a pin 9, to which is secured one end of a coil-spring, the opposite end of which is secured to a post 11, which is fixed to the disk 10, the latter forming a part of or being secured to the back 6 in any suitable manner. It will be seen that the normal tendency of said coil-spring will be to throw the back 6 upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1. In order to hold the back in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2, the free end of said back is provided with a suitable catch, the form of same forming no part of this invention. The plates 2 and 3 may be secured to the plates 10 in any suitable manner, their function being to protect and hide the coil-spring above described and to serve as part of the back of the chair.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a foldable chair, the combination of a hinged seat and back, uprights forming the legs and arms for the seat and back, a coilspring secured to the upper end of one of the uprights and to one end of the back so as to hold the latter in a vertical plane, means for securing the back when in a horizontal position, disks or the like forming a part of the back of the chair and serving as housings for said coil-spring and back-securing means respectively, substantially in the manner described.
