BACK-REST FOR STOOLS, CHAIRS, OR SEATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 669,253, dated March 5, 1901.
Application filed October 3, 1900. Serial No. 31,819. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may conceit 2 Be it known that I, ALLAN FRASER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Back-Rests for Stools, Chairs, or Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in back-rests for stools, chairs, or other seats; and it consists-in the peculiarand novel construction whereby a yielding back-support may be secured to and readily removed from the seat, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In piano-stools, chairs, benches, and wagon and carriage seats it is desirable to have a yielding or spring support for the back, and in some of these it is desirable that the support may be readily removed.
The object of this invention is to supply a yielding spring-back that may be'readily attached to and removed from a seat.
Figure l is an end view of a seat provided with my improved springback. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the yielding movement of the back being indicated in broken lines. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the spring-support. Fig. 4 is a sectional viewof the spring-support through the center of the same. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the support through the center of one of the sockets in which the back is seen red.
In the drawings, 0, indicates the seat of a stool, and b a back-support which may be of any desired form. It may be upholstered or of light open construction, such as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which the transverse bar I) is connected with the bar b by the rodsb Secured to the desired form of the back Z) or forming part of the back are the rods 6 which when the back is to be secured to the seat are inserted into the sockets c c, in which they are preferably secured by the clamp-screws c. The socketsccform part of the plate 0 which has the hook 0 by which it is pivotally connected with the plate cl by bearing on the bar (1, extending from the opposite sides d d of the plate below and across the opening d in the plate. The plate (1 has a hole with preferably concave dished margins, in which tests the head of the bolt, preferably so as to permit of a slight rocking movementol the head of the bolt 6. The bolt extends through an opening in the plate 0 It is surrounded by the coiled spring e, which bears on the plate 0 at one end and on the flange of the nut e on the other end. The flanged nut e is in screw thread engagement with the bolt 6 and can be adjusted to regulate the tension of the coiled spring. The screwf in the plate 0 serves a stop by which the position of the plate 0 may be adjusted and the normal posit-ion of the back b determined.
In type-writing, pianoplaying,driving,and
other occupations the adjustable spring-back forms a convenient rest which may be applied to any kind of seat by securing the plate d to the under side of the seat and inserting the rods b into the sockets c c.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a back-rest for stools, the combination with a plate secured to the rear of the seat, and a bolt supported by the plate. of a plate pivotally supported to the front of the first plate, a back secured to the pivoted plate, a flanged nut in screw-thread engagement with the bolt supported by the fixed plate, and a coiled spring interposed between the hinged plate and the flanged nut, as described.
2. In an article of the nature described, the combination with the seat, a plate secured to the rear of the seat, and a bolt supported by the plate, of a second plate pivotally supported at the front of the first plate and provided with two sockets, rods in the sockets extending from the back of the hinged plate, an adjustable support on the bolt, and a spring interposed between the pivoted plate and said adjustable support, as described.
3. In an article of the nature described, the combination with a plate adapted to be secured tothe seat provided with a bolt, of the back, the rods b secured to the back, a plate provided with sockets and pivotally connected to the front of the first plate, a flanged nut in screw-thread engagement with the bolt, a coiled spring between the second plate and the flanged nut, and an adjustable stop, as described.
10 f in the plate 0 the sockets c c, and the rods 5 Z) extending from the hack and supported in the sockets c c, described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my mune to this specification in the presence of two so hscribing witnesses.
ALLAN FRASER.
