UNITED STATES PATENT EEroE.
STEWARD SI-IICK, OF OLEA'RFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
FURNITURE-DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,050, dated March 17, 1903. Application filed October 30, 1902. Serial No. 129,426- (No modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEWAED SHIoK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Clearfield, in the county of Clear-field and State of Pennsylvauia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Drawers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to secret drawers for furniture, such as desks, bureaus, cabinets, or, in fact, any article of furniture with which a drawer may be employed.
The object of the invention is to provide a drawer of this characterwhioh shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of" production, and adapted to contain valuables designed to be hidden or concealed from view, and thus furnish a safe repository.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a piece of furniture and a bank of d rawers, one of which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. -2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through my improved drawer. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view therethrough. Fig. 4: is a rear view of the drawer, portions being broken away to more clearly illustrate the spring-catch.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a piece of furniture, and 2 my. improved drawer. The drawer is composed of the front piece 3, the end pieces 4, the back piece 5, and the bottom 6. The bottom 6-is supported uponledges 7 of the end pieces, a distance from the lower edges of said end pieces, and has its forward edge projecting into a groove 8, formed in the rear face of the front piece.
9 denotes drawer-slides secured to the inner sides of the end pieces at their lower edges.
10 denotes a supplemental drawer, which is adapted to engage said slides and be supported under the bottom 6 of the drawer proper and is provided with a back piece 11, which in design and finish corresponds to the bazk piece 5.
spring-catch 12 is secured at one end to the lower edge of the back piece 11 and lies throughout its entire length in a groove 13, whereby the same is concealed from view except when the drawer is inverted. The free end of the catch projects upwardly through a hole 14:, formed in the back piece 11, and engages a keeper-socket 15, formed in the lower edge of the backpiece 5.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the inventionwill be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation. It is evident that valuables placed within the supplemental drawer are concealed from view when the drawer proper is Withdrawn from the piece of furniture, and no evidence of the supplemental drawer will appear unless the drawer proper is inverted or turned upside down.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a drawer proper, the front and ends of which project below the bottom of the drawer and the back of which has its lower edge in a plane above the plane of the lower edges of the front and ends of the drawer, said back having a keeper-socket, of a supplemental drawer opening from the rear and provided with a back piece, which fits between the end pieces and is flush with the back piece of the drawer proper and formed along its lower edge with a longitudinal groove intersected by a vertical aper- 5 tu re which is adapted, when the supplemental drawer is closed, to aline with the keepersocket, and an angular spring-catch, one end of which is fastened in the groove and the other end of which projects through the aperture and is adapted to engage the keepersocket when the supplemental drawer is in closed position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
STEWARD SI-IICK. Witnesses:
BENJ. G. CowL, J. A. WILLSON.
