HARBYE. HARLAN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
TOILET ARTICLE.
SPECIFIGATION'forming part of Letters Patent NO. 742,639, dated October 27,
Application filed November 3, 1902- Serial No. 129339. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E.IIARLAN,3 citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toilet articles, and more especially to devices :0 for massaging, cleansing, and otherwise producing a healthy condition of the skin.
My object is to produce an improved fleshbrush, so formed that when brought into frictional relation with the body it may be manipulated to thoroughly cleanse the skin.
Afurther object is to provide increased contact and wearing surface, which by reason of its peculiar construction is adapted to soft and tender skins. 1
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my device; and Fig. 2 is a'view of the bottom or wearing-surface, showing the concentric rings.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference in the said drawings.
In the drawings, Ct represents the body of my device, and b a handle, preferably formed integrally therewith, said body extending ra 3o dially from said handle, with a fiatbottom having concentric rings 0 formed thereon. In constructing my device I use a flexible material, such as rubber. The rings 0 are prefer: ably formed integrally with the body, thicker 5 at their base andgradually tapering to a soft velvet-like contact edge, giving increased contact and wearing surface, adapted to soft and tender skins. The handle I) I preferably provide with a recess or chamber d, having an open end at the bottom'of the body adjacent to the concentric rings, in which soap or medicament may be placed, and by compressing the'handle said soap or medicament will be forced out into contact with the flesh.
In use my improved brush is grasped by the handle and pressed upon the flesh, the tapering edges of the concentric rings contacting with the skin and yielding under the pressure and scrubbing movement, thus softly and yet thoroughly cleansing without too harshly irritating the skin.
It will be seen that by my present construction all of the concentric rings are in contact when the brush is applied, thus giving a larger scrubbing and wearing surface, and, furthernore, the' shape of the brush is such as to be readily accessible for cleaning.
The soap or medicament chamber opening through the bottom adjacent to the concentric rings, the soap or medicament when pressed out by compressing the handle is immediately distributed and applied by the action of the-rings. Furthermore, the rings being concentric tend to hold the soap or medicament within the scrubbing-surface of the brush, and thereby thoroughly apply the same. 1 Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a toilet article, a flexible body, with a fiat bottom having flexible concentric rings thereon, a compressible handle formed on said body and a chamber in said handle having an open end extending through the bottom of said body adjacent to said rings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of October, A. D. 1902.
HARRY E. HARLAN.
