COMBINATIQN STOVE-LID AND COOKING-UTENSIL LIFTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,727, dated April 5, 1904.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STENGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amelia, in the county of Amelia and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Stove-Lid and Cooking-Utensil Lifters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to combination stove-lid-plate and cooking-utensil lifters; and

its primary object is to provide a device of this character adapted to be used as one or the other of the above-named devices and also a device that is cheap, durable, and efficient.

Further objects 'of the invention will appear as the nature and object thereof are more fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of my invention.

The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 and 2 designate, respectively, upper and lower members, having their forward ends downwardly bent to provide jaws 3 and 4, the jaw 3 being adapted to be normally projected in advance of the jaw 4 in order that when pressure is brought to bear upon the members they maybe caused to approach each other to clamp an article therebetween. The members are provided with flanges 5, forming channels for the reception of means to hingedly connect said members and also means for normally projecting the jaw 3 in advance of the jaw 4. The means for hingedly connecting the members comprise links 6 and 7 which are provided with perforations adapted to receive pintles 8, carried by the flanges 5. This manner of connecting the two members permits of jaw 3 being caused to approach the jaw 4 when the members are grasped in the hand and a slight pressure brought to bear thereon Application filed July 25, 1903. The link 6 has its upper extremity provided with a forwardly-projecting lip 9, adapted to engage the under side of the member 1, while the link 7 has its lower end provided with a similar projection 10, adapted to engage the upper surface of the member 2. The engagement of the members by the projections 9 and 10 limits the forward movement of the jaw 3 with relation to the jaw 4, which movement is sufiicient to permit of an ordinary cooking utensil being grasped between the two jaws. The means for normally projecting the jaw 3 consists of a leaf-spring 11, having its lower end disposed in a horizontal plane and provided with a perforation adapted to receive a screw 12 to permit of the spring 11 being secured to the member 2. The free end of the spring 11 is slightly curved and adapted to engage the under surface of the member 1. The flanges 5 of the member 1 are cut away at their intersection with the jaw 3 to provide a semicircular recess 13, adapted to receive the beaded end of a cooking utensil.

The lip 14 is adapted .to engage the depression in a stove-lid and the flanges 15 adapted to act as fulcrum-points during the act of removing and replacing the stove-lid, thereby adapting the device for use as a lifter for stove-lids. The rear end of the member 2 projects beyond the juncture of the lip 14 and the rear end of the member 1 to permit of the rear end of the member 2 engaging the flange of a plate, while the annular rib on the bottom of the plate is adapted to be received by the concave portion of the lip 14, whereby the plate may be grasped by the device to be lifted. The cover of a kettle may be lifted by the edge thereof being grasped between the rear end of the member 2 and'the member 1. A kettle when provided with a handle or bail may be conveniently lifted by the reception of the bail by the recess 13, the former being securely held within the latter by its engagement by the heel of the jaw 4: when pressure is brought to bear upon the members 1 and 2.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the character described comprising two members, each having one of its ends bent to provide a jaw, links hingedly connecting said members, means for normally projecting one jaw in advance of the other, and means carried by the links to limit the advance movement of said jaw.

Adevice of the character described comprising two channeled members, each having one of its ends bent to provide a jaw, links situated in the channels to hingedly connect said members, a spring situated in the channels to normally retain one of the jaws in advance of the other, projections on said links to engage the members to limit the advance movement of said jaw.

A device of the character described comprising two channeled members, one of said members having one of its ends provided with a lip and laterally-projecting flanges adjacent said lip, each'of said members having one of its ends bent to provide a jaw, links mounted in the channels to hingedly connect the members, a spring situated within the channel to normally retain one ofthe jaws in advance of the other, and projections on said link to engage the members to limit the advance movement of said jaw.

5. Adevice of the character described, comprising two members each provided with a jaw,
