HANDLE-FASTENING..
SPECIFICATION,forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,924, dated June 21, 1904.
Application filed April 9, 1904. Serial No. 202,429. (No model.)
T (1f/,Z wil/ont it 711,04/ coll/cern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAs F. MoIIR, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handle-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent,
. Figure 1, a side View of a screw-driver constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the handle portion enlarged.
This invention relates to an improvement in handle-fastenings for handled tools-such as chisels, gouges, and other implements-and particularly to that class in which the shank extends through the handle and so as to be exposed at the outer end, the object of the invention being a simple construction which permits the shank to be readily inserted into the handle and when inserted iirmly held therein; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
As herein shown, the handle A, which may be of any approved design, is formed with a longitudinal bore B, corresponding in diamf eter to the diameter of the shank C of a tool which may be a screw-driver, chisel, or other implement. The outer end of the shank is formed with a head D, preferably round and adapted to set into a correspondingly-shaped recess E, formed in the outer end of the handle. Upon the shank below the head D are spiral ribs or threads F, these ribs being formed in the Well-known manner of forming wood-screws by throwing the threads up from the body of the metal, so that the diameter of the threads is greater than the diameter of the body. The shank thus formed is passed through the handle and driven home, the threads biting into the handle, cutting their way until the head is seated. If desired and preferably, a pin Gr will pass through the ferrule H and through the' shank, so as to not only hold the ferrule in place, but prevent the shank from turning, although the shank will be very. firmly held in the handle by the threads.
Having fully described my invention, what yI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A handle-fastening for handled tools comprising a handle having a longitudinal bore, and a tool-shank corresponding .in diameter with the diameter of said bore, formed at its outer end with a head, and beneath the head with spiral ribs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof` I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MATHIAS F. MOHR.
