Be it known that l, THOMAS i V. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Leggings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved legging, the object being to provide a heavy canvas legging which can be readily and easily secured in place on the leg without the use of hooks and lacings and which when mounted will lie smoothly about the leg and stay firmly in position; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

As leggings are usually made they are open on one side along a vertical line and are secured in place by means of a lace which engages a plurality of hooks placed on the opposed vertical rdges. It has been found that this style of fastening quickly wears out the linings of long fur coats, and hence the leg gings are frcrpiently not worn wlu-motherwise they would be a great benelit.

My legging consists of a strip of flexible material A of practically quadrangular shape, one of whose ends is extended to form the V- shaped flap B. Said flap B is adapted to encircle the calf of the leg when in place and is provided at its apex and at each end of its base with fasteners 0. adapted to engage coacting fasteners l), secured to the body portion of the legging. The center line of said flap B encircles practically the smallest portion of the leg below the calf, and as the flap is drawn into place the edges of same are drawn diagonally across the bulge of the calf and the projecting rear portion of the foot. and consequently are held snugly against same. A strap E is provided on the lower end of the legging, one end being attached at the lower point of juncture of said flap with said body portion and its other end being attached to practically the middle portion of the lower edge of said body portion and is adapted to pass under the arch of the shoe of the wearer to aid in holding the legging in place. Said legging is also provided with a \I-shaped extension F on its lower end adapted to extend over the toe portion of the shoe when the legging is in place.

My logging is easily and quickly mounted, the overlapping. edges are all held snugly to the leg, and there are no hooks or other projections to cause annoyance.

I claim as my invention"- 1. A legging, comprising a substantially quadrangular strip oi. fabric terminating at one end in a \I-shaped flap, said strip being adapted to be passed around the leg below the knee and the V-shaped flap being adapted to overlap the opposite end of said strip and pass to the rearward of the calf portion of the leg. fastening devices at the end and corners of said V-shaped flap, coacting fastening devices on said body portion atsubstantially the middle thereof and adjacent its upper and lower edges, and a strap extending from the lower point of the juncture of said flap with said body portion to the middle portion of the lower edge of said body portion and being adapted to pass umlerneath the arch of the shoe to hold said logging in proper relative position on the leg, substantially as de scribed.

2. A legging composed of a single piece of material having one straight edge and an overlapping edge of V shape, the straightedge being provided with fastening devices adapted to be engaged by pressure; with coacting devices arranged in vertical alinement at the base of the ii-shaped flap, and the said flap having at its apex a fastening device adapted In testimony whereof I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing \vltncsses.
