* A. H. OQUINN.
SPARKARRBSTER. APPLICATION FILED IEBJB, 1005- witness attain UNITED STATES Patented April is, 1905.
ALEXANDER H. OQUINN, OF JESSUP, GEORGIA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,631, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed February 8,1905. Serial No.'244,'776.
To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. OQUINN, i citizen of the United States, residing at J es sup, in the county of Wayne and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spark-arresters; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this character which may be applied to the chimney and of such a nature that the sparks passing through the pipe leading to the flue will come in contact with a deflector and be caused to drop back into a suitable receptacle positioned within the flue or upon a pipe in the flue.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically de-- fined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a sectional view through a pipe,
flue, and spark-arrester. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing a slight m'odification of the use of the device, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a flue, which may be of any construction either of metal or masonry and has an opening A in the bottom thereof for the reception of a stovepipe B. Positioned within the flue and resting upon the bottom thereof is a receptacle C, an enlarged detail view of which is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, said receptacle being provided with a thimble D, fitted over an opening therein in the bottom of the receptacle, said thimble tapering and adapted to telescope over the end of the Stovepipe, as shown. Said receptacle is provided with a suitable handle E, whereby the same may be withdrawn from the flue when it is desired to empty the contents of said receptacle, and is provided with a deflecting-plate K, having radial arms K, with laterally projecting flanges N, which are adapted to fit over the upper edges of the receptacle 0, as shown clearly in the drawings, whereby the device may be securely braced. Said deflectingplate is positioned a short distance above the top of the thimble D and is of larger diameter than the upper end of said thimble and is provided for the purpose of forming means to deflect any sparks that might pass through the pipe and thimble to cause the same to fall back into the receptacle.
In the form shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings it is my purpose to telescope the thimble over the end of the pipe; but in Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification of the application of the device, in which the receptacle is positioned on the bottom of a flue of masonry and so arranged that the sparks may pass through the thimble and come in contactwith the deflecting-plate. In. each instance I have shown a door 0, whereby access may be had to the flue for the purpose of removing the spark-arrester.
While I have shown my device as applied to flues for use in buildings, it will be understood that it may be applied equally as well to locomotives or boilers of various kinds, and it will also be understood that I may vary the detailed construction of the device in various ways, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr A spark-arrester comprising a receptacle having an apertured bottom adapted to be placed in the flue of a chimney, a conical thimble fitted over said aperture, a deflectingcliskhaving radial arms whicharedownwardly In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my carvedd and providedhwith lateral flanges signature in presence of tWo WllZDQSSGS.
' a apte to rest upon te upper edges of sai receptacle at positions opposite each other ALEXANDER OQUINN' 5 with the lower ends of said arms bearing Witnesses:
against the inner faces of said receptacle, as set J. G. J ULIEN, forth. J. V. ROBERTSON.
